the final drive on a 6r cat. the 3 bolts with the "retainers" or washers, i got one leaking. can i back that bolt out, reseal it with something and tightnen it back up? not familiar with the insides of the finals....thanks
The pins which those bolts retain are a press fit in the carrier. Early ones had a habit of coming loose and leaking oil. The specs on the bore were later tightened up to give a tighter fit. So short answer, yes. You can remove the bolt and put some silicone or something behind it, but it won't be a permanent repair. If it starts to leak badly, you may have to have the carrier bores reclaimed.
thanks, this final was suppose to only have 500 hrs on a rebuild, but maybe it was junk to begin with. ah the joys of used minchinery....haha thanks again
If they are just collecting dust or dirt then it is probably okay my old D6H has been that way are it's life ,even after rebuild.Never more then that.If oil is running out then i would be for having thing refitted.Good luck.
bulldozer phil Had the same problem w/my D6H-early 3ZF-took off the cover and had it machined for an O-ring-CAT dealer should have the specs-works great.
Did Zeigler do the work?
No-I got a new cover and had a local machine shop cut the O-ring groove. My dealer is Altorfer and I may have the CAT sheet around. I only had one that seeped and this dried it up completely.
thanks guys, going to try and get her to seal up after i get done with the job its on, hate for the bolt to break or something and have the dozer down over a small leak
What you really want to worry about is not the bolt breaking but the pin behind that big "washer" turning and buggering the final drive carrier when it does. If that happens you're looking at major disassembly and a large number of dollars to fix.
The newer dozers have a oring step on the end of the pin, don't know if they are the same size. We have bought new pins and machined an oring groove in the pin, works good, but kind of hard to put together.
There is a Service Magazine SEDP0778 from April 2005 that reads as follows: - D6R Series II (S/N: BNC1-UP; AFD1-UP; CAD1-UP; ADE1-UP; BLE1-UP; BRE1-UP; DAE1-UP; ACJ1-UP; BMJ1-UP; BRJ1-UP; BMK1-UP; BNL1-UP; AEM1-UP; AFM1-UP; AGM1-UP; BPM1-UP; AEP1-UP; BPP1-UP; BPS1-UP; BLT1-UP; FDT1-UP; AAX1-UP; BMY1-UP; BPZ1-UP; BRZ1-UP) D6R (S/N: 2HM1-UP; 4FM1-UP; 8TM1-UP; 2YN1-UP; 3ZN1-UP; 4HN1-UP; 4MN1-UP; 5LN1-UP; 6JN1-UP; 7KN1-UP; 8LN1-UP; 8XN1-UP; 9MN1-UP; 9PN1-UP; DMP1-UP; 4JR1-UP; 4TR1-UP; 4WR1-UP; 5PR1-UP; 5RR1-UP; 6FR1-UP; 6GR1-UP; 6HR1-UP; 6MR1-UP; 7AR1-UP; 7DR1-UP; 7GR1-UP; 9ZS1-UP; 1RW1-UP) The Press Fit of the Carrier Has Been Increased. A change has been made to the carrier of the final drive. The diameter of the bore for the planetary gear shafts has been decreased. The change to the bore will increase the press fit of the shaft. The tighter press fit will prevent oil from seeping past the shaft. The change will also increase the stability of the shaft. Adaptable To: The part number of the 9G-9175 Carrier will not be changed. The change to the 9G-9175 Carrier is effective with the following machines: AEP626-UP ADE905-UP ACJ114-UP AAX1196-UP AFM165-UP AGM112-UP AEM116-UP The new design of the 9G-9175 Carrier can be adapted to all of the machines that are listed above prior to the Serial Number break. The new design of the carrier can also be used on any of the other tractors whose Serial Number prefix is listed at the beginning of this article. Former Bore Diameter - 50.80 ± 0.013 mm (2.0000 ± 0.0005 inch) New Bore Diameter - 50.78 ± 0.013 mm (1.9992 ± 0.0005 inch)
Is there anything similar to this for a d6h sn 4Rc-00538
The same 9G-9175 Part Number of planetary carrier is used on the D6H. Same comments apply as above except it is in reference to ALL Serial Numbers. This is because everything 4RC-prefix would have been built using a 9G-9175 with the former 2.0000 ± 0.0005 inch bore dimension for the planetary gear shafts rather than the new 1.9992 ± 0.0005 inch diameter.
Thanks for the info now I have my final apart because I got some wire in the seal and these bolts have been leaking since I got the machine I just took one of the bolts out and the pin spins in the housing so I assume they all do so is there a fix for this or should I look at getting a new 9g 9175 updated version
If you take the existing planetary housing to a good machine shop they ought to be able to give you a price to weld up the bores and machine them back to the new diameter specification of 1.9992 ± 0.0005 inches. Then compare that against the price of a new 9G-9175.
Ok thanks I found some after market for 700 to a 1000 not sure on the quality or if it’s a updated bore but I’ll figure it out I really appreciate you taking time to help
