I finally got away from work long enough to set down to reseal and clean up the replacement donor trans for my old 7G. I still think they need to license people to buy 'blue glue' or in this case Red, seems the last guy in here used a caulking gun to apply the stuff very VERY liberally, it was in both pump suction screens. This is the main suction strainer, where steering and trans control pressure comes off, was loaded with little red glue globs and droplets with rust and dirt, must have refilled the trans from a rusty yard bucket!!
A little goes a long way's, very interesting, the caulking gun size is a good buy, just need a small hole in the tip, is there an o-ring??sam
Most of the fitups on my old AC is gasketed, have seen red glue applied to pieces of gasket and in place of gasket since doing my repairs. What O-rings I have found were hard as rock and square from age as well red glued too. For two 3/4" wide gasket areas they smeared over 1 1/2" of red glue and had it oozed out to both sides over 1/2" in a roll. What a mess, hopefully all will still operate OK internally. Did try the clutch actuations with air they hold pressure and do apply in all speeds, seems at least that much functions, will have to await the swap to see if they will pull at all. Now awaiting a speedi-sleeve for the trans input yoke, have installed a new seal but the wear groove is pretty harsh.
Well, you know what "they" say: if a little is good, a $#|+load must be better
Pretty much what I am seeing, I have been a wrench too long, stuff like this just pi$$es me off as to the brainless aspect of it. They seem to forget there is very little clearance in there with the gasket, old gaskets still don't seal well with the silicone and adding tons of it only migrates it to places you do not want it. The 1/2" bolts that held the strainer in place, the red stuff was from head to tip and still slimy from the oil migration through the threads, these got thread sealant/red Loctite. And when there is a problem like a gouged face they just add more of the crap!
My favorite is when they think they can just put it on the OUTSIDE of a gasketed joint (like an oil pan or diff. cover) to stop a leak. :beatsme
Got the next sticker shock, had seven hydraulic hoses made up to replace the age hardened ones as I swap trans/converter, $580 for seven relatively small hoses from 1/4" ID to 3/4" ID. Have four hoses on the MP Bucket supplies that need replaced, are 1 1/4" ID, short ones are three footers(1 meter), the longer are 5 footers(near to 1.6m) was told to expect close to $600 for the four. I am tempted to get Gates Hydraulic and reusable fittings to make my own rather than the crimp locks.
There's got to be something wrong with that? Surely that old girl just needs 2 wire hoses? Try www.discounthydraulichose.com , even if just for price comparison.
Already have an account with them, just got lazy and considered a local shop to make them, WOW what a shock. Even with shipping would be cheaper from DH. And you are correct, the old Allis uses lower pressure, higher volume for the hydraulics, two wire is fine.
