FMC Tracked Skidder

This set of photos was taken back in October 1980 in Naselle, WA. T&Z Logging of Montesano, WA was logging a unit purchased 3 years before by Roderick from Aberdeen, WA. This unit was not suited for their Madill 071 (or any tower) so they purchased an FMC. The loader was a Prentice 610 operated by Marvin Zillyette. Tagman was operating the skidder. There was one day on this job that he forgot to set the emergency brake and the skidder rolled backwards down the hill. As I watched him begin to panic, for a moment I thought about running and jumping into the skidder but thought better of that idea. The skidder eventually ran into a stump and stopped without too much damage. The log was a 7' Douglas Fir left by the "old-timers." I recall a mouse running off the log once we started to yard the log. This tree must have been partially responsible for reseeding the area because there was some beautiful second growth fir at this site. The rigging crew was Larry Tidus, Craig Manley and myself. The log truck driver was Mike Savono. (sp?), driving the big fir to market.

Check out the thread "Alaska Logging Equipment Left to Rust". That black and white W9 looks a lot like one in that thread, and the name is at least partly visible on the door. Could this be the same truck? Someone in the Alaska thread said it was sold at the KW dealership in Hoquiam.
