Hey guys!!!! Just bought a 69 ford 4500. Picked it up late at night and of course after a 4 hour ride there I was ready to get back on the road.......... First issue I run into when I get home is that the transmission wont go into reverse, trans is what i think is the 8 speed version with 2 levers. I popped the cover off and used a pry bar to reach in and slide the syncros till i found reverse. My issue lies in this, the shifter appears to short to fit into the shift fork rods and im not understanding how the 3 rods actually select the syncros, can someone educate me and maybe post a couple pictures of what should be in there? I will grab some pictures in the morning as well so maybe someone will be able to recognize whats missing. Second problem is the tilt cylinders on the front loader are bent, whats my cheapest fix here? Used cylinders or replacement shafts? Im sure there will be more and ill update as frequent as I can
8 speed trans It's been a long while since being inside a 8 speed trans in a ford. your pattern if you don't have it 1 2 4 L 3 R ----------------- 5 6 8 H 7 R The trans is set up to load the loader in 2 most of the time and be able to shift straight back to reverse one in the low range while working. Then if needed a fast reverse by moving the low range lever to high to get to reverse 2 which is really most of the time too fast for most sites in close areas. Ford has a web site, Type in New Holland Na and select the construction (Yellow is construction) (Blue is ag) and go to the parts section, enter your 4500 and follow the props for your parts pics . It will show you the trans shifter/ shift rails / gears. You could have a worn end on your shift lever, wear on the sides of the forks that slide the syncro, loose hardware that holds the rails to forks in time and so on. You should be able to set both in neutral, main gear shift and high low, place the low range in low feeling the detents, then move your shifter from 2 to reverse 1 and watch the movement. May help to raise the rear wheels off the ground and be sure to control the detent springs and ball/popets that are held down with the shifter cover so they don't jump out while testing. I do not think I have a S/M for a 4500 still, there are some members that have them that could give you more info.

left stick is gears right is high low correct? the shift cover was half assed installed when I got it. The shift lever is definitely worn down and the shift for on the middle rod looks broken.
Looks like a double post for me, yes sitting in the seat the shifter to the left is the gear shifter and the right is the high low. Can you post a pic of the gear shift cover turned upside down.
so it looks as if the revers syncro fork is broken off it also appears the shift rails are stuck in their current position hydraulics seem a bit weak so that will need addressing as well, looking like an overhaul this winter
Let's back up a bit... I'm not trying to be difficult, but we first need to get the terminology nailed down so we can communicate clearly. There are no synchronizers in the 8-speed used in a 4500. Ford made synchronized and unsynchronized versions of the bigger 8-speed used in like 7600s, but not in the 4500s. Starting from the top, there are two shift levers that go through and pivot on the shift cover. (this pivoting is important, don't forget that if the knob on the shifter moves forward, the bottom moves back, and there is a lot of leverage involved.) The righthand shifter is range only and the ball on the end fits in a socket instead of a gate on the hi-lo rail. The left shift lever has a ball with the sides flattened, which fits into 3 gates. The leftmost gate has a link that goes to the bottom of the tranny and puts it in and out of 4th gear only. The center gate is part of the 2nd and reverse fork. The righthand gate hooks to the rail with a set screw, it moves the rail and the 1st-3rd fork, which is also held to the rail by a set screw. Each fork moves a dog clutch that locks each gear to it's shaft. OK, for your problem, we need look only at the center gate and it's associated parts. I don't see the part of your reverse fork that is broken in your photos. The bottom of your gear shift lever is showing some wear, but I've seen much worse working fine. The center gate that the shift lever fits into looks good. Unless you are certain that the center fork is broken, what I would do is: Depress the clutch, then take a prybar or very large screwdriver and line the three gates up. Remember, the gearshift lever gives you about 10-1 leverage, so it may take some force. Once you have all three gates in the center, which is neutral, put the shift cover back on. Be very careful to get the gear lever in the center of all 3 gates, the range lever in it's socket, and the stationary pin in it's socket near the neutral safety switch. Don't feel bad if it takes a few tries, it can be a bear to get it all lined up. Make sure to put 4 or 5 bolts in so the cover can't move. Now try shifting and let us know what happens. Good luck, Mitch Now try shiftin
I can not get the center gate to move clutch depressed and large pry bar.
Any help
Can you tell where it's locked up? You might have to turn the shafts a little, if the "dogs" are aligned it won't go in either direction.
In your 2nd pick your center rail is showing the detent grove for that shaft close to the case. It looks like there is a hole on the case above it filled with goo. You may try to clean that hole out and remove the spring and detent. It could be the detent has dropped behind the shaft and is blocking it from being able to move back.
Sheepfoot you are the man!!!! All 4 detents were froze 1,3,4 are free but 2 has dropped down. Is there a way to get it up?
is it accurate that these pins and springs should come straight out when the cover is removed? none of the pins want to come all the way out although they are all now moving. Im thinking of taking a dremel sanding disk down the holes real quick
Got them out!!! Thanks guys!! Whole lot of up and down and clr and they're free. Transmission needs a flush bad. Missing the 1-r spring and ball but got the detent pin itself. Ordering a bunch of parts this week to dress her up and I'm stoked I don't need a transmission. Thanks again guys!
detents I was on the ford web site just before you posted, it is a 3/8 ball in them, The shift rail size thickness when installed, the ball can only travel into the three detent slots, the pin keeps the clearance on the ball down enough to cross the grove between the detent slot and does not allow it to raise high enough to allow the main thickness of the shaft to pass unless the cover is off. Hope you have good success with your repair, and as always ask away, with so many good members to pick there brains as a group you can get a lot of info from this site.
Hey guys, I would have thrown my 2 cents in, but I've been gone for a couple looooong days. Looks like they weren't needed; another good catch by sheepfoot. One of these days I am going to meet you, we only live 100 miles apart, next door by internet standards.
