Fuel injectors need cleaning?

ProudMarineDad ยท 2008-07-12 22:19

I have a bobcat 73 that has been hard to start lately and sometimes RPM's go down like it is going to die. I have to throttle up to keep it running. Do the fuel injectors need cleaning? Is there a pour in the fuel tank solution to clean them and if so what is the best brand? Also is there a fuel filter i might change to make it run better? I'm sorry i dont have a owners manual about filter questions. Thanks for any help.

Sounds to me like a week fuel transfer pump or air in the fuel system. Yes, injectors need to be cleaned but normally you will see the engine smoking more or even missing. Sorry there is not a true "Mechanic in a can" you can clean these with. They need to be pulled and sent to a fuel shop. The fuel shop can clean, adjust and test these for you. If you think you have an injector problem this is money well spent.

Does this machine have a rubber squeeze bulb in the fuel line? They have been known to dry out and crack. If you squeeze it a few times and it gets hard it should be OK. Next follow the line to the fuel filter and replace it. When you put the new filter on leave the end going to the engine off till you pump it full of fuel using the squeeze bulb, then attach the other end and move to the transfer pump. Should have a bleeder screw to let you push fuel to the pump. Once you have fuel there it should start and run. If it does not start you will have to loosen the injector lines and crank it till you get fuel at the injector. Do these one at a time. You may also have a broken fuel pickup tube in the tank. This is usually found if it runs good when tank is full but loses power or dies as the fuel level goes down. Good luck.
