fuel oil dilution

WeedKiller ยท 2015-01-16 00:57

i have a 73 jd 544a loader. i have used it during the summer around the shop no problems. in the winter i use it for snow removal. my question is, is it possible that over cranking the engine to start it when the temps are below 15 deg without using the hot shot can cause f/o dilution of the crankcase? or should the hot shot can be used always when starting in cold weather? somehow i got a crankcase full of diesel fuel mixed with the oil. since the fuel system is external i dont see how else the fuel would get in there other than injector drip. but i have noticed the guys just cranking and cranking it without using the start aide. any input would be appreciated.

I'm not sure what you mean by "the fuel system is external".. but all fuel systems have to be run by something INTERNAL.. weather it be a camshaft or gear.. I think you have a "roosa master/stanadyne" injection pump on that engine??? but they have a drive shaft with rubber seals that ride in a brass tube that go bad often.. and that might be where your dilution is coming from..??? If you can get some #'s off the tag on the inj. pump we can go further..

ok i am changing out the oil on it today, its only 10 deg out here today and I am going to be laying in the snow. Oh lucky me!!!!. I will get the numbers of the injection pump. but yes I agree with the internal gear part to drive the two pumps, I just meant there is no internal fuel lines running internally through the head of the engine.

injection pump numbers as follows: Stanadyne # JDB635AL2446 AR51568 60D76838 if it does turn out to be the pump what do you think the availability and cost might be? Since we don't have a JD service dept in our area how easy would it be to replace and time? Thanks guys

The pump ISNT HARD AT ALL.. remove the small side cover window.. 2 screws.. rotate the engine over and line up the lines.. theres going to be 1 stationary and 1 that comes around.. just line them up and pull the pump.. The pump DOES HAVE a brass pilot tube..more than likely.. that's where the fuel dilution is coming from.. your call.. Just look up "diesel fuel injection" on "floogle" and you'll find a diesel injection shop in your area.. A REBUILT PUMP is going to be your better option than a NEW PUMP.. If you were closer.. I'd hook you up..

Thanks for the comeback and will try to find one around here. i dropped the oil and in 53 hours i got 18qts drained out instead of 12. also just a question the low pressure pump that sits on the filter side of the engine could that one also pose a problem with F/O dilution?

i checked floogle came up with the closest place to get a pump from my location is Mississippi,,,,, so i am going to have to ship one either way so how can you hook me up pumpguy

Install a block heater on the engine, plug it in overnight and save your batteries and starter and its also easier on the engine to have it warm when starting it. The pump needs to be checked over as thepumpguy has said, also take out the injectors and have them checked over as well, if it were me I'd put on a new lift pump as well if it has one on it.

Yes, it's possible. Just loosen the nuts holding it tight to the engine and use the priming lever to pump it up and keep it pressurized for five minutes or until it's obviously dripping diesel.

it has a block heater, problem is its not located by a power source to plug it in. It is a 5 mile trip all up hill and anyone who has one knows how slow these things go uphill lol.

I don't know about your engine but I know on the 2 stroke detroits if this happens it has fuel lines and copper washers on the connectors and injectors in the head under the valve cover so internal that will leak and it will fill the crankcase in a few hours of running sometimes less depending on how bad the leak is. What I would suggest is check for an internal leak. If you've got injector tube ect... I know on ebay there is a guy in Louisiana that sells a fuel primer/ tester kit that's really handy put it on which ev r filter inlet you want primary or secondary and then put a petcock on fuel return to pressurize it and then check for leaks.... if you have an injection pump it's possible it's leaking internally. And if you could block off all the discharges from it you could pressure check it too. Or even each individual line if you can rig up a good connections....hope this helps?
