Fuel system bleeding Cat 426 with a Perkins

ycanby ยท 2017-01-04 21:02

Hello, I just put a new fuel filter in my Cat 426 hoe and also cleaned out the water separator. Been trying to bleed the air out of the fuel system as per the book but not having much luck. Any good methods for bleeding the 4-236 Perkins. Thanks in advance. YVC

How about some more info? Do you have a priming pump? is it pumping fuel? what does it feel like? Have you tried turning the engine to a different spot on the cam? Are you trying to start this? or still trying to get the air out?

open the injectors and crank away. Once you get fuel start closing them. A little shot of either might help and a charger if the battery gets weak. Best to have someone crank when your working the injectors . Dont let the spray hit your skin

Hello, Yes it has a priming pump and it is pumping fuel. The pump feels like it pumps for a few strokes then doesn't do anything. If I let it go for a minute it will work again for a little. Also I can hear fuel going back into the tank after a few working the pump a few times.. However, the fuel doesn't seem to come out of the loosened fittings very heavily. The book says to leave the key on while doing all the priming. I reckon that is so the fuel shut off is open.

The bleed screw is the one by the name plate on the injection pump.. double screw 5/16 wrench.. loosen screw, pump hand primer, get air out and tighten.. loosen all/most the lines AT the injectors.. Hold the throttle WIDE OPEN and crank the engine.. until fuel squirts out the lines at the injectors.. & tighten.. Make sure the shut-off lever is in the run position on the pump..

I'm think its a Lucas/Delphi DPA pump.. but as usual, nobody puts the type of system in their posts.. its not like theres a name plate w/ letters & numbers on it..

Have someone pump the hand primer while you loosen the two bleed screws on the injector pump. Slightly loosen the lower one first. When all air is gone from fuel, re-tighten. Then slightly loosen upper bleed screw and do the same. Re-tighten. Crack just one injector while turning over engine with the key. As soon as engine fires, re-tighten injector.
