Ive got a customer with this grader and it has a 4cyl detroit engine not sure what model. It seems to be locked up but it was running when they shut it off 2years ago. Its been outside in the whether and i noticed the muffler doesnt have a cap on it. I figure that maybe it has water on top of a piston or two. It started to turn over and the fan moved about 2 or 3 inches and the starter just wont push it further. Any suggestions? I was thinking about removing the injectors and trying to turn it over but i dont know how to adjust the rack properly...so if anyone has a procedure on that it would also be helpful.
Are there side plates on the engine? I hope you didn't bend a rod, anytime you suspect water in engine you should turn it over by hand first.
Well i didnt really suspect water in it cause i checked the oil before cranking and it looked fine. I dont know about the side plates but ill check tomorrow when i go out there.
update Ok i removed the starter to have it checked out cause it was working half the time and i used a pry bar to turn the flywheel...it was hard but it moved. Had the started checked and it was bad so we replaced it and hit the start button and at first it didnt want to turn but it finally did and cranked over fine once it broke loose. Anyway, we had to do a bunch of work to get it running and finally did fix everything and it runs good. But now it will not move very good like the transmission is low on fluid or something. Im not sure how that all works but it has a clark transmission and i found some plugs near the bottom. I removed the plugs and found ATF in it but im not sure how much should be in it or even where to fill it. We did fill the hydraulic tank because most of the cylinders were leaking pretty bad and it seemed low but when we ran it hydro was running out of the top pretty good. So either its over full or the suction filter is bad but im not sure how much to put in it because there is no sight glass. Any info on this would be appreciated!!!:Banghead
I found out how much trans. fluid it should have and its about 4qts low. Im gonna go ahead and service the trans. and change the hyd. filter also and just go from there. If that doesn't fix it i think it might be the clutches going out, we'll see!
We serviced the transmission and filled it with new fluid and it still will not move like it should....it moves but just barely. We did find quite a bit of metal in the bottom which would prove that there may be a problem internally but they said it was moving fine when they parked it 2years ago. Should i maybe take the selector valve apart to change o-rings or see if something is clogged up or should i go ahead and take the trans. out and tear into it? If anyone knows what else could cause this problem please let me know. Thanks.
