I have a 1845c, that the fuel gauge is stuck at full, at all times.. Disconnected the wire at the sending unit, pulled the sending unit moved it around, looked ok i guess. Now i am stuck, Any suggestions? Comments, etc... Mike Sands Lv., KS.

This type of sender works with a variable resistance. As the sender (fuel level) floats up the resistance changes which in turn changes the gauge in the cab. If you have the tank sender out measure resistance (with an ohm meter) as you slowly move the gauge up and down. In this process it should never read OL (out of limit or open). If it does the sender is faulty. If not check the wiring. You can use the same ohm meter to do that as well. If you check sender and its good I can explain how to check the wiring later. Something to try. All I can do is makes suggestions. Good Luck, Z

For the sake of sounding stupid, please explain this procedure. Just for clarification and sounding stupid..

Ok, have you ever had a switch in your house for your lights that when you turn it the lights dim? Same principal. When you turn the switch you are just changing a resistance on the ground side of the light. The better the ground the brighter the light. The fuel sender is like your house switch only the fuel level is making it turn. Does that help?

Now in order to see the resistance in the sender you need something to test it with. The tool is called an "Ohmmeter". You need to understand resistance first.

No, I get all that, just wanting to know where to put the leads? Where the gauge wire connects and mounting plate?? Gauge wire on or off?

You will need to pull the sender from the tank in order to operate it manually with your hand. I don't know of a way to do it while still in the tank. One lead on the wire terminal connection on sender and one wire on the ground part of the sender.

Actually now that I think about it. Leave sender in tank. Take wire off of sender. Connect one lead to terminal and the other to ground. Is it open?

It is the sending unit... OL traced it back on the inside of the sending unit, the very fine thread wire and found the dead area... Thanks for your Help...
