High Pressure Oil pump of HEUI Injection system spins drive gear loose DT530E motor

Has anyone ever had a problem with the drive gear spinning loose on the high pressure oil pump of a HEUI injection system? This is on a 1998 International DT 530E engine. We've replaced the pump (ran about 1/2 hour) Replaced oil pressure regulator valve. Gears loosens & spins bolt out about 1/2 inch. Gears & Idlers look fine though have not taken front cover off. Gear torqued to 95 lbs per specs, fuel press 50 & high press oil max 2500 psi on test gauge at full load, Engine warm but not hot. I can't find anyone that has run into this problem. Have not replaced the ICP sensor. Not sure if this is the best forum for this question, new to these forums. Thanks

is this gear being installed on a tapered shaft? i learned a lesson on a cummins fuel pump drive gear along time ago when one spun on me with the same exact scenario running for a while then to the point of no running at all. anyway the solution is as the book says, "clean and dry with no oil residue" the way i do this is wiping all oil out with starting fluid and blowing dry or brake clean and blow dry....thats my two bits, good luck.........theiornoracle

Not tapered, flat face, new pump came with gear factory installed but good tip on the degrease, thanks!

roth250, i am missing something here? you say shaft is not tapered but flat? i picture maybe a not tapered shaft slipped into female gear retained by a bolt? if this is the case then it must have an interfearance fit. you must have to heat gear to expand then cool to grab shaft, or there is suppose to be a key, does it have multiple bolts backing out? there is something missing here maybe i need a picture. if this is a reman send it back and have them defect it out, it has a problem............theironoracle

clean the retaining bolt threads and the thead in the shaft well with brake clean or similar, locite and torque the retaining bolt, sorted

The shaft has straight cut end that slips into the bore of the gear , then there is a straight shoulder on the shaft that the back of the gear sets against. A bolt with 95 lbs torque holds the gear against the shoulder of the gear. That friction of that surface on the shoulder holds the gear. If the gear slips the bolt spins out & lets the gear free. It seems to be designed as a fail safe in case the pump would seize up. Already tried the locktite, gear still slipped. During testing yesterday we got a max of of 2400 psi on a manual gauge when pulling full power using brakes to pull engine down. The interesting thing we found is that we are getting a pulsing of the oil presssure. At 1500 rpm no load & 1100 psi the gauge needle was jumping about 600 psi rapidly. At idle we got as much as 7-800 psi jump sometimes. I'm sure this is not normal. If it hammers like that under load it could shake the the gear loose just like using a burp gun on the bolt. Any idea's on the cause of oil press pulsing? The gear has come loose with two different oil press regulators, so doubt if that could be the cause.

Could it be that the friction from the gear spinning has spoiled the machine fit on the mating shoulders? You aren't getting the surface area contact to provide the grip.

ahh ic is it an aftermarket gear perhaps? does the pump shaft sit recessed when the gear is fitted (as to allow clearance under the bolt to pull in and clamp the gear onto the shaft) or as Ray suggeted the shaft and/or gear worn so that the shaft sits flush with the outer gear face (without the retaining bolt fitted) which will not grip the gear it does sounds as though the pulsing maybe the underlieing cause, or that pulsing may be caused from the gear slipping also?

New Bosch reman pump came with new gear factory installed by factory. It came loose in about a half hour. Pretty sure it's not a problem with the gear but rather what is over loading the design of the the drive. Anyone idea's on the possible causes oh severe oil pressure pulsing? Could the ICP sensor cause it if the readings were fluctuating? Does anyone know how the oil gets from the oil pan to the pump? Is there any way for air to get in the suction line. Motor is full on oil & clean. Also as to above questions, the shaft is recessed in gear so torque is applying properly. The gear really has no way to partially slip. Once the gear turns on shaft, bolt comes out & everything stops immediately.

i would return pump for warranty and see if the new pump does the same. It it came with the gear installed then it would be a Reman defect.

We later found this was caused by a bad harmonic balancer. The vibration at high rpm was shaking the gear loose. Sounds strange but absolutely fixed it. Thanks to West MI International for solution.

Interesting. I have seen the gears come loose, but not often and cleaning/loctite worked. I've always wondered why (other than being far cheaper) International switched from viscous fluid dampers on the old style dt466, to the rubber ring style for the NGD and E models.
