Hitach ex 60-2 electrical problems

Hi all, please be gentle i am a newbie! i have a reasonable amount of basic engineering, hydraulics and electrics knowledge. my father in law recently purchased an ex60-2 for carrying out work in his woodland. ditching, taking stumps out, excavating a pond and loading timber etc. the machine is good, very pleased, however it has started to suffer with electrical problems that concern me. the previous owner did precious little to look after the machine. the batteries (24v system) were useless, battery relay not functioning, numerous bad connections and corroded fusible links. over the course of the last few months we have been making good these problems. not cheap and quite time consuming . Now the alternator has packed up, fitted a new one and still the system won't charge:beatsme. there is a t shaped socket on the back of the alternator, i have been told the loom plug that connects to this should have 24v down both wires with the ignition on, apparently the crossbar of the 't' terminal plug is the 24v feed to the alternator to excite it and the down stroke is the warning lamp. i only have 24v down the feed wire and not from the warning lamp? this apparently could mean i have a leak to ground between the lamp and end of the wire??? :confused also to make matters worse i seem to have encountered other issues such as the intake manifold heater solenoid stays live even after the timer has clicked out almost cooking my intake heating system , the only way to stop it is to disconnect the small solenoid wire. it seems the more i do to make things better the worse it becomes . i have been meticulous when making new wires and connections to ensure they are good joints and connected correctly. i did make one mistake when removing the old alternator, i shorted the spanner against the case and blew a fusible link. that is now repaired:duh. i am having another go this weekend can anyone offer any suggestions to help?? do the electrics on these machines normally give trouble??, at the moment i spend more time fixing it than operating it, a friend of my father in laws suggested not bothering with the electrics/electronics and converting it to a more conventionl system, fitting a separate charge lamp accross batt+ to warning lamp wire, fitting a manual pre heat button, bypassing the ignition switch and fitting a lucas one and most importantly converting to a manual throttle and using it has a conventional, non computerised machine, it won't be as efficient, i fully understand this, however i am not earning my living with it using very little diesel and am quite capable of setting revs to control digging/tracking speed etc. please any suggestions or advice gratefully received before one of us goes insane and/or bankrupt!:Banghead:Banghead

I'm no electrical or H/Q expert, with that said I've had some experience during the past year with repairs to my 1991 ex60. I also had alternator rebuilt & still it would not charge the battery, the charge indicator light as well as other indicators on control panel never worked since i owned the machine & I spent many hours on this with no results. To fix charging problem I installed a push button switch on control panel, you can wire it to any 24 volt wire that's live when engine is running & run a wire from that switch to exciter terminal on alternator. When you start engine push the button to excite alternator, works just fine, doesn't need to be left on, you just have to remember that button when you start engine. On a totally unrelated do you have a Nissan engine & if so do you know where I can purchase parts such as water pump?

Alternator issues Hi, well i finally sorted mine , bought a genuine reconditioned Hit Ex60 Alt, fitted and now working better than ever. apparently there is some circuitry in the OE part that most pattern Alts do not have!. the Hitachi alt gets a feed from inside the Alt off the batter positve terminal, well thats how it was explained to me. sounds similar to your problem and your fix!! 24 volt feed from somewhere. with regards to parts i use these people in the uk. [email protected] A guy called Mark runs it, extremley helpful, pleasant to deal with and the service is excellent. he has sourced my Alternator, Oil cooler, some diodes and anything else i need hope this helps Tony
