Hitachi EX120-5 Battery connector #5 wire shorted to ground

Bendiesel ยท 2025-08-22 00:15

So my neighbor, the recent widow has this old hitachi x120-5 1E4-52454 6,657.9 hrs that sat for 18 mos then she asked for some help to get it going again. We figured out several issues and resolved most at first but this remains: HELP Battery connector relay- #5 white wire is shorted to ground (isolated & disconnected state)and has 131 ohms to ground. Blew the 60 amp fuse once. The short is somewhere between lower side of fuse block # 8 the 10 amp fuse holder and the wire connection at the 100 amp battery connector relay in the battery compartment next to the condenser. Thought the culprit was in the monitor card internal or through fuel gauge level sensor but my eyes cannot see the tiny schematic. Local dealer sent a used monitor and no fuel level sensor. I am going to try an get a huge magnifying glass tomorrow and try and find the test point(s). Any ideas fellow good neighbors? Pure religion undefiled... Previous back story- wiper motor shorted & had a 20amp fuse blown- replaced motor and installed correct specified 10 amp fuse blower motor bearings shot-replaced several fuses overloaded swapped with too large of fuse compared to specification requirement-specification(s) restored Battery(s) jumped with 12vdc instead of 24vdc- replaced arc damaged terminal(s) Alleged rebuild on travel motor- completed install broken boom work lamp light- verified no short on circuit secured loose wire AC compressor clutch shorted to ground 13 ohms -disconnected and isolated temporarily So a bunch of short(s) to ground was in these system(s) but all have been cleared or isolated except this primary B+ 24 vdc circuit that of course feeds the starter and fuse block and it seems the alternator. I can't remember what else but each was isolated and tested to find the last point of testing was inside the monitor and the only thing through that yellow green wire back feeding was indicated as a fuel level sensor I believe. Anyone else seen this same issue? Strange things can and do happen and it can get blurry even with bifocals but I am trying to do the right thing for this widow @ FOC...

Is there no help for the widow's machine?

Patience please. The Hitachi guys might be busy.

I am patient but winter is not she comes fast and hard in the last frontier and the widow's wood pile is not getting any larger... My plan today is to troubleshoot the white wire from battery connector 100I relay end to end to see what is shorted still. It seems like the last time it was isolated in the monitor internal yellow green wire to fuel level gauge possibly originating in fuel level sensor . Fuse block #8 is jumped to 7 & 6 also I think so as 2 optional and switch box. Any help is greatly appreciated bc my wood pile is extinct also and it ain't going to grow until I can say safely begin to her. Prayers are appreciated much more than s So the short was isolated to wire 526 off fuse block #13 heater 20 amp fuse that goes to the ac heater now I have to determine where exactly that is and what is the malfunction.

Anyone know where to order seat parts like the undercarriage of the seat with the adjustment device(s)? My local dealer does not answer multiple requests for parts.

T that was wire 576 it is all in extra small type font. Anyone know anything about a shorted circuit on 576 to heater from fuse block #13 20 amp fuse? Air Con_Ign circuit

    Buehler?

I am not getting out or am I stuck in some kind of social media purgatory? short to ground fuse block 13# 20 amp circuit to heater. Air Con_Ign cut labeled on the tiniest schematic I ever seen. I am curious does anyone know where wire 576 lands and if any components it may feed through that could be causing this issue? I am trying with a magnifying glass but even with bi-focals it is next to impossible to read.

It is the 60 amp white wire B+ from 100 amp battery connector relay that is being shorted from the fuse block #13 20 amp circuit labeled heater and Air Con_Ign. The short to ground on the white wire B+ disappears when I remove the fuse from the block on the white wire but remains shorted to ground on the top side of the block that goes to Air Con _Ign 576 wire. I think...

See screenshot below of oem A/C harness.

Portion of cab harness below. Wire # 576 in the cab harness A/C plug connects to wire 21 at the mating A/C harness plug

Be thankful you got a response. It's not like someone else had the exact same problem and is spending every waking minute watching the forum so they can help you. People are busy with their own stuff.

Mr. Ben Diesel is not kidding. The leaves starting falling today and I had to use my headlights for the first time since April. The days are getting shorter and Fall is in the air. This Hitachi with electrical problems and a busted seat sounds familiar. Where are you at, Mr. Ben Diesel?

The 3 relays shown in the A/C harness schematic are mounted on the outside of the A/C unit. See item #17 in a parts screenshot below.

Thank you kindly to all, especially my neighbor Diesel Dave! I will get crackalackin with these very easy to read prints. For those who know Alaska, the Upper Susitna is very unforgiving.

Not so bad today. Warm, cloudy, a few sprinkles. Water level is dropping fast. Still a few fresh coho. Hardly anyone on the river this summer.

Thank the Lord for the good samaritan from Canada...

So after a few days of intrusions we saw that the mag clutch was shorted on the ac compressor. Additionally, the alternator had some bizarre readings from the transistors it is going to get bench tested at a local shop. Meanwhile our local guys have been trying to answer our questions about getting parts on hand and pricing and getting correct parts prices and stock in real time. The alternator will get bench tested and the load dump relay will be inspected for shorted ground as well as isolating a wrapping up that ac mag clutch. The yellow green wire from inner fuse #6 goes to the switch box aka 100 amp relay, load dump relay R1 and R5 horn. The work boom light and air filter sensor will be checked also for good measure. This has just been going on here and there since we got those great Chinook prints ay!

Power transistor in alternator shorted and mag clutch on ac compressor was shorted back feeding frame ground and 100 amp relay on #5 60 amp wire
