Have jd544b...had vibration seemed tied to the motor .. never really changed if it was in gear or not but it ran fine ... suddenly lost transmission and hyd functions .... seems to have small bit of hyd power and transmission pressure guage shows some moment like there is slight bit of pressure ... steering works fine .... shaft to hyd pump is turning as well as shaft to transmission...broken shaft in hyd pump maybe ???... how does that effect transmission tho?

Surprised you still got steering. The hydraulic pump needs oil from the transmission pump to supercharge it I believe, given that the tranny is duff, sounds like you either lost the trans pump, have a plugged up strainer screen, or are sucking air badly somewhere.

Thanks for reply ... machine has had vibration for past while ... maybe pump shaft broke but is still catching enough to make it function slightly ?

Transmission pump maybe, the hyd pump shouldn't affect the transmission operation I don't think.

you can not see the hydraulic pump shaft that works the loader unless you pull the hydraulic pump off, The hydraulic pump that is under the rad at the back is just for the steering and brakes, chances are that the rubber drive inside the bell housing let go or where the drive shaft bolts to the torque converter, You will have to start the machine and put it in gear and see if the drive shaft between motor and trans stops or keeps turning to see which side let go, Either way it is a easy fix

Thanks for the info ... shaft was turning when machine was in neutral ... will put it in gear and take a look

drive shaft is turning into tranny..... assuming it's come apart where drive shaft bolts to torque converter easiest way to access it is by pulling the motor ?.. simpler than pulling cab and tranny I'm thinking ?..

looks like something at the torque, you can just pull the seat out and the floor under the seat and do it that way but it is kinda hard, if you pull the left side of the cab off there is about 4 bolts on the top and 6 bolt down the back then you can pull the battery side off the machine and it gives you lots of room, that way if the tran does have to come out you can just lift it and come out the side, there is 6 half inch bolts with 3 locking plates that holds the input shaft to the torque, I have a 544B in the shop now that 5 of the 6 bolts broke off and the broken pieces fell to the bottom of the trans, this machine was still driving but had a bad vibration, so to be on the safe side you should drain the trans and check for for anything in the bottom with a magnet, there is a screen on the pick up tube in the bottom of the trans but you can not get it out unless you pull the trans

ok ... thanks for the info much appreciated

Same thing happened to me, JD tech took a look , said it was a flywheel drive damper, it connects the output shaft from the flywheel to the shaft that drives the pump for the transmission and pistons for the bucket hydraulics, the pump on the front of the motor runs your steering pistons. The damper is supposed to cut vibrations from the transmission and engine, but it sounds like a weak link to me, at least they could've put it in a place that was more accessible.
