1989 Peterbuilt 378. Cummins NTC engine. I need to know how to prime the fuel pump. No hand pump on this old boy.
Ok-there is no hand pump on any 855's through N14's. Fill the filter install, there is a plug on top of PT injection pump, remove plug dribble fuel in till it won't take any more install plug. Crank it over till fires. * Why does it need priming? Was work done on it? Has it been setting?
Yes been sitting. Work has been done. All new fuel lines throughout
Perhaps you could loosen the output side of the pump and put 2-3 psi of air in the fuel tank (plugging the vent of course) to drive the fuel thru the lines.
Working on it tomorrow. Gonna definitely try.
Cummins 855's normally self prime if filter & pump are filled. Below the plug to remove to fill is circled. *
If it's been sitting a long time, you might wanna drain the water off the bottom of the tank and check inside for algae. Just a thought. Also, maybe make sure the shut-off solenoid is working or use the manual thumbscrew.
Manual screw is pictured above between the two brass fittings, on the front side of fuel shut off solenoid.
This is how I prime my N14. Stand pipe leaks a bit and will need primed if it sits for a week.
