How to time injection pump for removal jd 310d

Hola everyone, So I gotta little bit of cash and free time in the same place at the same time. Time to make something useful happen. Diesel pump on the deere needs to be rebuilt or at least looked at. Won't restart when the engine is hot been told this is a pump issue. Can anyone tell me how to time the engine to remove the pump? Is there anything else I need to know about removing the pump? Thanks! 1997 deere 310d

Mine had a no hot start problem and it ended up being the 12v power wire to the injector pumps fuel solenoid. Make sure that wire and it's connects are all good before pulling that pump.

There should be a timing window on the side of pump rectangle with 2 screws holding it take it off and you will see a scribe line turn motor over untill the 2 lines line up

Thanks, I'll look into that to make sure but I'm pretty sure it's the pump. They say it's all expanded hot and doesn't suction properly. When you throw cold water on it it starts properly again.

Tg Thanks so much! Is there anything else to know besides just unbolt the unit where seems obvious?

Be sure piston #1 is TDC on the compression stroke.

Just make sure you get the umbrella seals on the shaft right and they don't fold back

I just did this job. My job had the pump that leaves the shaft in the engine, NOT attached to pump or the gear that drives it. As stated above, remove the small cover with 2 screws, right there on the outboard side of the pump. Roll the engine over until you see a moving disc with a definite line in it line up with the stationary line on the body of the pump under the cover. Don't hairlip the seals on install, and verify timing by seeing the dots on the end of the shaft and the bottom of the bore in the pump line up. It will all make sense when you see it. Leave the inlet fuel line loose while you pump the lift pump handle. Bleed filter first if it is empty. When you are sure all the air is out of the inlet side, tighten up the lines. Crank it up. It may just start right up! Mine did, with a small miss. Cracking injector lines did nothing. I ran the RPM up to 1500 or so, and it cleared it's own self up.
