Ideas for removing a jack hammer bushing.

f311fr1 ยท 2017-10-22 22:24

I have a skid steer jack hammer that I need to replace the bushings and pike. I have the every thing except the bushings out. I have tried a slide hammer to no avail. Next i made a plate to fit behind the front bushing with a nut welded in the center with a piece of 5/8 all thread through the bushing and through a plate across the front of the hammer with two jack bolts to no avail. Any ideas?

So this is an internal diameter bushing that's stuck? Weld 2 or 3 beads the length of the bushing as hot and fast as you can. This will cause the whole bushing to expand, and the hot part will deform under the stress, when it cools completely it should be shrunk enough to come out much easier.

We will try that today. Let you know how it goes

Stick welded a bead around the center ID of the bushing. Welded a 4 foot 1/2" by 1" bar to the outer lip. let it cool enough to clean the grit out of the bore. Sprayed P B Blaster around the OD and turned it out of the hole with the bar. Will do the inner bushing tomorrow. The new bushings are in the freezer since last night.

The top half of the inner bushing is out with a torch and air hammer. Bottom half is going to be a die grinder and a bunch of time.

Somebody did to many Mack dry sleeve overhauls

It is 8-9 inches down the hole. I have a straight tip torch on order to split the bushing down the hole.

That's what a STICK welder is for. or maybe I'm missing something about this, just rambling about what I'd do without seeing it.

Removed a load of old suspension, and support bushing over the years, even dry sleeves this way.

Good news. My straight tip torch worked great. split the remaining bushing in vertical thirds. Took my time, about 90 seconds of torch with a #1 tip, a little cold water, clean out the hole, go do somthing else for an hour, do it again. I also bought a 18 inch long chisle bit for my air hammer which worked much better than a hammer and chisel. I have one small spot to clean up with a die grinder, it looks like fron the chisel. Then a fast polish with a 4 inch tuffy ball on a drill, a good cleaning and lets see if the bushings that have been in the freezer for 2 weeks will drop in. If so let sit for a day so they will expand to room temp and drop on the bit and pins. i will let you know how that works.

Just to help yourself. Call your gas supplier. They should have dry ice in chip form . Get enough to submerge your sleeve/bushing. The bushing will scream cry and wail when you place it in there. Now you know you're getting small. If you have a torpedo heater, aim it at your housing for a half hour or so. That will help expand to allow the contracted sleeve to go all in , in one shot. Because, you only get one shot. Good luck and be safe

I agree with funwithfuel you only get one shot. Once that bushing gets started on the bore it'll warm up and get stuck in no time. You have to do it in a hurry .

Just have a stop on the other side if you use the dry ice!

Since you're dealing with a smaller bushing and housing, have a drift and hammer ready that fits the bushing. If she starts to stick, you gotta drive fast and hard with long swings. If it stops, mid install, odds are you're buying another bushing. Good luck and be safe

Bought dry ice at Kroger. Let sit for 12 hours. Got the bushing in the bore up to the top of of the bushing. 4 x 4 with corners cut to fit and a 2 lb hammer would barely move it down the hole. The shop I retired from is making a driver from the old pike and a piece of pipe to slide over the shortened pike and weld in place. Left 2 inches sticking out the bottom to center the driver in the bore and bushing. About 1/16 inch clearance on the OD of the pipe piece vs the OD on bushing. I will try it later tonight with a sledge hammer. If that dosent work my old shop does have a large press.

    At least is close

Man, I'm sorry to hear it didn't go well, hope the press works for you.

My buddy made up my bushing driver Fridy afternoon after work. The inner or lower bushing went in and seated with about 30 licks with a sledge hammer. The upper went in with about 20 light hits with the sledge. Our mechanic is coming over when he gets finished with the tri axle dum truck pand we will put it the rest of the way together and test.

All done and back in service.
