Info needed on this Cat D6

I went to go pick up a plasma cutter from a Craigslist seller today, and when I was loading it into the truck, I noticed a Cat D6 dozer. I asked the seller- do you want to sell that dozer? He said: yes! So I'm wondering if you all can help me identify which model D6 this dozer would be, and how much it would be worth in its current condition. Some info about the dozer: (hadn't started in 6+ months) - Electric start pony motor seems to run good - Engine started and ran really good with no smoke (95 degrees out however) - Lots of crud on the engine - Water pump leaks bad - Has a winch - Seemed to drive OK, seller seemed to have trouble shifting into gear? (not sure what's normal)

D6 9U model. Looks to be in pretty good condition. Good ole tractor

Did you get the serial number. If it is a "newer" 9U with the oil clutch there were a bit hard to get in gear until the oil warms up in the clutch. The oil friction would turn the in neutral transmission until the oil warmed up. Engaging the winch would stop the transmission for slipping it in gear for the first time. With the cable blades we used to pull the CCU handle to stop the transmission from free wheeling for that first gear shift. The 9U series was one of the best old mid-sized dozers ever made in my humble opinion.

Thanks guys- I didn't get the serial # - where is that located on the dozer? Anyone know how hard it is to get a water pump for one of these, and how hard it is to change out?

Usual procedure is to rebuild the water pump. Parts still available from Cat. Not a big job to remove and replace but not a quick job either. First thing to check with shifting difficulty is the transmission brake. s/n locations and capacities.

Thanks! Where's the best place to find parts/prices for Cat parts for this job?

the caterpillar dealers can still supply parts. Caterpillar also made a version that same type dozer that was a R series. it had a smaller 4&1/4 inch bore. and many of them where narrow guage. the 9 U D6,s had the same sleeves pistons & bearings as the 7U D4,s only two more cyls.

Plug the part numbers into a search on www.machinerytrader.com .

Any thoughts on what a dozer like this is worth in this condition?

I'd guess in the $5k to $7.5k range.

W/ the engine idling push forward on the clutch handle and see if that makes it easier to get in gear. That's what makes the clutch brake work. If you buy it and when working it, you have to get off and don't want to kill the engine, put the tranny in neutral and engage the clutch. This will make the pilot brg last a lot longer. Mike
