Looking for some experienced opinions on JD vs Cat machines in the 30,000# range. Am looking for a machine to do clearings in our woods, stumping, etc. Will also use it for general projects around the property; land work, ponds, etc. Whatever machine we get will likely never see asphalt. Work will be forest & property work. Have pretty much narrowed it down to JD & Cat in the 12-14 ton range. Due in no small part to helpful input from folks on this forum. Had originally also considered machines in the 8-9 ton range (JD 75/85, Cat 308) but have pretty much decided that they would likely be a bit light for what we needed to do. I have no experience with excavators. So am looking for information on durability, maintenance, what folks like & dislike about the JD 130/135 models and Cat 312/314. Also, some perspective on the reduced radius/zero radius vs standard would be great. Mobility and maneuverability will be important, but the price differences between the standard and reduced radius machines gets a bit salty. Thanks in advance.
Are you buying new or have consider used? Do you have a price range?
Yes I have a price range and have already priced new & used. Am focusing more on new machines & quotes, but will consider very clean, very low hour used.
I would consider a good used 120D or 135D with a blade just for the simple fact of emissions. One of the things that I see that hurts the pre IT4 machines are the prices are going up on a good quality used machine to where a new machine is not far off. Its going to get harder and harder to find good used Pre IT4 machine before long. As far as 130 vs 135 goes you will get different answers from different folks. Some will like the 135 in the woods for counterweight not being stuck out and knocking it into trees. Power is not really any more in favor of the 135 as you would think. Even thoe they are good on fuel. The blade will help it out a lot on slopes. But you can get one on a 130 also. 135 is a bit tipsy compared to a 130. As far as 130/135 vs 312/314. I can't say anything about the newer 312/314. Was not impressed with a 312's up to a D. Couldn't lift, out dig or multi-function as good as the deere's .
