Picked up an early model JD 310 TLB recently, tested it out, machine was strong, had all gears, no slip and reverse. Drove it for several miles to get it home, up and down hills got home, no problems...all gears work from 1-8. In my yard, moved shuttle to reverse and nothing, I may have been in High gear, not remembering the reverse lockout. Now it will not move in reverse. Linkage looks ok...Being new, I don't remember how much travel was in the shuttle lever, doesn't seem like a lot of travel between forward and reverse. Looking for suggestions, what to check, etc. before tearing into it ??? Planning on changing out hydraulic and transmission filters soon. Thanks for your help.
check the roll pin that joins the linkage to the reverser underneath, they are bad about breaking and not allowing it to shift in to gear.
Thanks for the suggestion. The shuttle lever on the dash has some travel roughly 2" between forward and reverse, if a roller pin was broke would it have more travel, as in moving significantly? Could the reverse lockout on high gear hang the linkage up, this is one of my next steps after looking at the roller pins. Thanks
the linkage on my 310a has a good bit of movement also,i suggest you let a helper sfift the linkage from reverse to forward while you are underneath watching the rod to see if it is getting full travel, but remember to do this with the machine not running.mine does not have a reverse lockout in high, but i would think that if the lockout was the problem, you would not have any movement in forward either,if the linkage looks good, you may have to put a gauge underneath at the reverser housing, and check pressure in forward and reverse.
Appreciate your response. On your shuttle shifter, about how much travel do you have on the outside of the lever between it being fully up in forward and fully down in reverse? Just getting this unit, I don't have much to compare it to. I will look at the linkage to see if I can see any issues. Thanks.
not at home to measure, but the linkage is fairly sloppy, but when the shifter is moving from one direction to the other you should be able to feel it go in to a direction, the reverser housing has a detent position with a springloaded ball to hold it in.
Just wanted to post an update.....went out and checked the linkage. Kept thinking the shuttle lever didn't have enough travel.... Took out cotter pin, removed clevis pin and found the control valve lever moved up and down about 1 full inch...So...I adjusted the clevis up 6 full turns put the pin back in and checked the travel of the shuttle lever...now it travels about a full 3 inches and now there is absolute proper travel on the lever...With this...I have full forward and full reverse...works excellent...thanks again for the assistance.
you are quite welcome, glad i could help.
