Hello I was moving a tree off the road, finished, then went to move the machine. Parking brake will not release and noticed a huge puddle of oil. Turns out the transmission had emptied itself. I got underneath and had someone start it and the leak appeared to be comming from the seal on the filter. Removed the filter and although the seal did partialy lift out of the filter grove i see no damage to the seal (mating surface on the trans is clean too). I cut the filter open and it's clean(filter had about 1000hrs on it). There is some (grey/black) sediment in the oil but it's minimal and the oil has about 3-4000 hrs on it. Not sure of where to start so any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
Deere or aftermarket filter? Are you sure all the pieces of the filter bypass inside the filter are intact? The picture below is an extreme case, but make sure the entire metal at the bypass end of the filter is intact with no missing pieces. Has transmission pressure been checked?
Thankyou mg2361 for your reply, The filter is a carquest and was cleaner than i expected with very little sediment and definatly no mechanical damage. No, i have not tested the transmission pressure although i think that is the direction i'm headed. An internet search tells me it could be a stuck transmission pressure relief valve but i do not know where this is located. Any chance you or someone else could get me a diagram or picture of the relief valve and pressure test port for the transmission on a 410k. Thanks again
Relief valve is between the torque converter bell and the front transmission case. Access involves removal of the transmission and some disassembly. Check the transmission pressure first. I have no faith in a Carquest filter. Check your messages.
The filter may not be your problem but MG is correct about aftermarket filters. The transmission operating pressures were increased on the J and K backhoe’s. Many of the aftermarket filters were not designed to withstand the higher pressures. Not my first experience with parts of a aftermarket filter affecting the main pressure relief valve.
