A friend of mine called me about an old JD 24A skid steer he's having trouble with. He keeps losing drive to one side of the machine. He adjusts the control linkage up, it works again for a week of so then stops working again. Controls are a single stick with a T handle top. Move the stick forward/backward, twist it to turn. All mechanical linkage of course. Anybody ever worked on one of these? I've never seen one before. Tips & tricks? Has he got a pump on the way out?
Always works in reverse, it's only the forward direction on one side that goes away after the thing warms up.
Check the relief and the seat on the the weak pump
Ive worked on one but the hydraulics are the same as modern machines. There is a relief for each direction for each pump, swapping reliefs on the one pump would tell you right away if it is a relief if you loose reverse on that pump then you know its a relief or more. They are tough to work on though as you have to work through where the seat is.
Hi OFF, I'm having the same issues with mine, also in Alberta. Must be a Redford virus. The relief valves for these pumps (Sunstrand) are no longer available. They're just a spring and ball. I tried getting mine out in the bobcat. The bolt has a slotted head. Damn near impossible. I'm pulling the whole skid out now, the motor and pump slide out as unit. "Course they always act up when you need 'em the most.
Hi All, the actual cause of this malfunction was the roll pins (4 per swash plate) working their way out. Sometimes they'd catch and work sometimes not. Hence the issue. The original roll pins were a an actual rolled pin (approx. 3 layers) also not much spring to them. I plan on using regular spring type roll pins (single layer) and hopefully they'll stay put. The depth you hammer these into is also critical ( 2 per hole) to maximize your engagement area of the driving pins, which is what they are.
Of you still have this skid steer please send a picture of this repair. I just got a JD24A that reasons intermittently to turning right plus it is difficult to find neutral on the forward/back t-stick Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
