John Deere 310 Tranny issues

Boomer192 ยท 2014-08-24 15:00

I have a John Deere 310 Backhoe (1971-75). The tranny has always shifted slow from forward to reverse and back ( 4 to 6 seconds) but once engaged would work fine. Recently, it has started slipping as it warms up, to the point where the tractor will not move. Shut it off and let it cool down, and it will move again until it warms up again. The rest of the hydraulic system works as the steering. any suggestions to my problems? Thanks, Boomer192

Suggest you do some research on this site. The early 310's and 410's had pretty much the same operating clutch/reverser/transmission. My initial thought is clutch packs in the reverser need replacement. But that is a big job and you need to check the easy things first, like transmission pump screen, the shuttle shift adjustment screw, vertical and horizontal filter replacement. These machines use a dry faced clutch that turns a transmission pump, which feeds the hydraulic front pump, then there is pressure oil that feeds the reverser clutch packs, for forward and reverse shuttle operation. Here's what it says in the manual, Unfortunately I can't tell from the picture where this screw is (looks like it is underneath near the filter that sits vertically) Hope this helps a little at least. To adjust reverser shifting, stop the engine and locate the speed-of-shift adjusting screw (accumulator charging orifice screw) located on the side of the control valve cover (Fig. 9). Turn IN the adjusting screw with a screwdriver to slow down the shift. To speed up the shift for heavy loads or when the shift becomes too slow, back OUT the adjusting screw. Turn the adjusting screw one fourth turn at a time until the desired speed of shift is obtained. Recommended shift time when making this adjustment is 3/4 to l-l /4 seconds.

The reverser shifting screw is under the right side of the machine, make a imaginary vertical line behind and under the brake pedals and you will see the square control valve cover about 4"x4" size that has a flat head screw adjustment on it. Chroniekon is right, back out the screw to speed up the shift. If you can't identify the control valve, ...go under the machine on the clutch side and follow the ~ 3/4" thick rod from the clutch linkage that enters the control valve. Not sure this is going to trim that shift time that much.

Chroniekon and Outbackrider, Thank you for your help. I pulled the screen and cleaned it (wasn't plugged tight, but quite dirty. mosty dirt with a bit of metal) and replaced the two filters. I've been cycling the rams to get all the air out. They seem to work pretty good, but the tranny still skips and will stay engaged when going into a dirt bank. Not sure if adjusting the reverser speed screw will help this ? any more suggestions out there? Anyone know of salvage yards in upstate New York that buys equipment for parts?

Try McFadden's in Sharon Springs, near Cobleskill. Also Wenger's down in Pennsylvania..they pallet &ship. What do you need?

You don't have anything to lose trying to adjust it. The way the accumulator works it could explain both symptoms? I hope you're not giving up on it yet.

@robfxrs ,The thread is over 10 years old, may not get a response from Boomer192. See screenshot below showing the screen. If you have more questions I suggest starting a new thread. .

Found an even better description of the screen location.
