john deere 317 skid steer hydraulic problem

wdo65 · 2019-06-09 16:03

I have a jd 317 skid steer with 1800 hrs on it. the valve which controls the lift arms started to stick, so we rebuilt the valve but it still sticks. any ideas on what to do or look at next?

Hand controls? Foot controls? When you say sticks, you mean if you raise the boom and let go of the controls the boom still goes up?

foot controls,, it will keep going up or down till you make the pedal find its nuetral

Uh oh...……..that's usually not good but maybe you will get lucky. Is the pedal difficult to move? MG is the man you want! I assume this is a foot pedal mechanical link set up? If so, make sure your linkage isn't binding up from a bolt being too tight on a pivot point, debris around the controls. You can take the linkage off of the boom control spool and work the spool by hand (with the engine not running and the boom propped up), if it still sticks you probably have something in the lube grooves of your control spool that is causing it to bind against the control valve housing. The boom spool should only have centering spring resistance in both directions and should move freely against the spring tension. It should center itself though the spring tension alone. AGAIN......do NOT move the control spool without the boom stop, or propped up. It WILL come down!

The pedal pivots on those machines like to seize up. Disconnect the link that connects the pedal to the spool. If the pedal is real stiff, that's your problem. If it is nice and free, then you have a spool issue. This can all be checked with the engine off and the loader boom all the way down. If the pedal is free then check the spool lock solenoid (since you already had the valve redone). Maybe swap it with the bucket spool solenoid to see if the issue moves with the solenoid (they are both the same).

ok,, here is the new situation. I pulled the valve bank , pulled the valve and noticed a very small burr in the center of the valve. cleaned off the burr, reassembled the valve assembly, reinstalled back into the skid steer. now, when I run the boom raise pedal, it will move a couple of inches and stop like its under load. then I run the dump pedal the boom will go up and down , with use of the dump pedal only. it will not dump. bizzare. I stopped and talked to a john deere service manager, and he told me to check the valves under the plugs to see if the springs were not broken. checked those , they are fine. any ideas?

It sounds like you have some hoses crossed and in the wrong locations.

^^^ Lift and dump hoses crossed.

when we pulled valve bank, we wrote down which lines go where, also the lines are steel and the way they are formed they cant go anywhere else.

Then something in the valve isn't right. You didn't get the spools in the wrong section did you?

Is there a 3rd valve in the bank for auxiliary ?

yes there is a third valve,, the only valve we took out was the first .
