Working on putting a new pump in it, and i cant get the starter to turn, when i push the start button, and you can hear it click and the flywheel barely moves. Is there any way to troubleshoot if it's the starter or solenoid without ripping everything apart? Thx
Battery dead ? Loose cable especially the ground. Check the voltage at the starter when it is engaged.
Will the motor rotate by hand? I had one that the starter was barely turning and the engine was locked up.
voltage is good, I tried turning it by putting a screwdriver in the flywheel hole, while helping the starter to turn it over, but it barely moves the flywheel. would it cease from sitting? can i free it up, if i jack it up, and try spinning the tires in high gear?? thx
no she's good, 13 volts at battery and starter
Still a lot of things it could be.... including rainwater down the exhaust, fuel or antifreeze in one of the cylinders from a gasket or injector failure(do NOT try to crank it over if there is a possibility of this being the case!!!) starters can get their brushes stuck from sitting and lose most of their torque resulting in a barely moving starter/flywheel combination... could also still be a bad connection to the starter either between the battery or the solenoid and started itself( I know you said you checked... but how did you check?) rapping on the end and side of the starter with a small hammer can sometimes remedy the stuck brush issue.
Voltmeter on the starter, and the solenoid. it was turning over fine, before i took out the pump, i have a flap on the exhaust, i did change the oil in it, there was water, but not a lot, which was below the oil, very clean, and came out 1st. probably from sitting for a while, it separated from the oil.
water under the oil could indicate rain got in the exhaust, flap won't always keep it out!!! if rain did get in then it went through a cylinder to get to the oil in the pan.... so there could still be water in one or more cylinders!!! do not try to crank with the starter any more!!!! You really need to ease it over by hand only. You say took out the pump... is it still out? Using the starter to crank the engine over when there is a possibility of water in a cylinder( or air intake system) can and probably will do damage to the engine by bending a connecting rod or damaging a piston! Water can also get in the engine from rust holes in the exhaust, muffler, intake pipes, air pre cleaners, etc... BTW: just remembered one other time I had the same symptoms and thought the starter was bad on a tractor.. turned out to be the start switch was only energizing for a split second every time I tried it... so the starter would just give a bit of a turn.
You need to get this to turn over two complete turns by hand before trying the starter again. It SHOULD be easy to turn a tiny bit at a time with a screwdriver through the starter hole, let the compression leak down and turn another tiny bit. Or grab the belt and the fan and turn it a bit at a time. It's possible for the starter to hang up and keep the engine from turning, so pull the starter, make sure it works fine, and turn the engine over by hand.
ok I give that a shot today,if water got in the cylinders, will i be able to work it out, by turning it by hand? I still have the pump out, didn't take the starter out yet. she sat longer last time i pulled the pump, and didn't have a problem, turning' her over, and that's before i had a flap, i was just covering exhaust with a little bucket, and came off a couple times, from windy storms, but again, she turned right over.
I didn't get it to turn over with the starter, so I couldn't of bent anything. when i did try and start it, turn it over, I was just trying to get it to TDC, to put the pump in, and it would only move the fly wheel, a tooth higher, in the inspection window.
You'll know soon enough. If it doesn't work out by hand, you can take the valve cover off and tighten one valve so it's cracked slightly open on the cylinder on the compression stroke, just be careful not to bend it when the piston gets to the top. Or pull the injector on the cylinder on the compression stroke. If it loosens up, turn it a few times and blow the water out, or soak it up (manifold off) before trying the starter.
