John Deere 650GTC transmission problem

We have a John Deere 650GTC it will randomly take first gear and will spin the tracks. When it doesn't take first gear it acts like it is in neutral. It happens in forward and reverse only in first. All other gears work fine. Any ideas on what to check or look at to fix it? Sn TO650GW795683
