Keeping your stack black

DPete ยท 2012-12-03 16:15

I've tried every kind of spray exhaust paint, nothing works as good or is as cheap as this method. Sand stack, clean with lacquer thinner, roll on Rustoleum high heat stove paint with a cheapy foam roller, 2 coats max straight from the can. A quart lasts forever. Try it you'll like it. The roller leaves a little texture, when it dries you can't tell.

Or you can be like my owner and replace them with chrome, that will sooner or later rust. Then you have to listen to him complain about cheap chrome, and how much those stacks cost. Then he tells you to order another one and put it on when it gets here. Ha ha I like them black, thats a good idea, rust-oluem makes some good stuff at a reasonable price that you can get at any store.

Painting exhaust stacks, must be a slow day at work today. Maybe tomorrow you can paint the dipstick handles and fill plugs red.

Thats good. If i work on a piece of equipment and it is well taken care of, clean and painted then i will go that extra mile to also take care of it. Example, if i have pans and sheetmetal off, i will get it washed off before assembling, If the machine is trashed then i will just assemble it after i fixed what i needed to.

LOL, rained 2" over the weekend, pretty quiet anyway, have always kept my stacks painted, IMO an old rusty stack makes a nice machine look like crap. Took about 45 min and a few cents worth of paint, good for 2-3 years.

Same here with the paint.... any time a componet comes out,,, new paint goes on. Its my opinion with new paint you notice problems earlier... beside's I think my customer's would rather have a sharp looking machine working for them.

I'm with you on the paint and keeping machines looking good. I did some side jobs for a guy years ago who kept his highway trucks immaculate. I asked him about why he did that. He told me to imagine two trucks speeding down the freeway side by side. One truck is his and the other one a trashed out rolling wreck. A state constable comes up behind them, which truck do you think he will pull over? I told him enough said.

Thanks for the tip DPete, noted. :notworthy We got this painter fella, does good work, nice looking paint jobs, but he has two trademarks, 1) there's at least one sag somewhere in the paint, and 2), exhaust will be old black and whatever color over spray that he's spraying. That pipe drives me bonkers painted differet colors like that. :Banghead

The stacks look nice DPete. I will address mine with your method.

@ john c most of the time they'd pull the good looking truck over..... (less paper work )

My good friend who runs 6 trucks has the same philosophy and it works for him too.
