Komatsu wa80-6 delayed shift to neutral

akrultz ยท 2025-09-24 20:22

I have a Komatsu wa80-6 that take about three seconds to go into neutral after the selector switch is moved there. It does not seem to matter if you are from reverse or forward. If you are coming from reverse the backup alarm goes off right away so electrically it seems fine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to HEF " akrultz " . That would be a rare machine around here. Would that be electric solenoid shift control, or valve bank spools. Have you hooked up any gauges to it, to see how much charge pressure you have. Have you changed out the transmission filter, did you cut it open to see whats inside. How about suction screens if it has some. Sometimes the dealer will tell you where they are hiding. Would be good to check your cab ground cables and all the battery box cables. A bad ground cable can sometimes allow a machine to start, but control circuits suffer from voltage drop. Is there any codes on the unit, active, stored? Might be an idea to post a serial number. The only manual I have found for this machine has almost nothing transmission related so I don't know where to tap in to check the charge pressure or what it should be. It is hydrostatic drive and has electric solenoids to move the swash plate for forward and reverse.

Need to check the power and grounds going into those solenoids. Could be 1 or more corroded ground wires that can play havic with the shifting. The back up alarm can have its ground in a different place than the control soleniods. Would be good to check out at solenoids location. Simon C

I can check but can't see how that can be an issue when both are deenergized for neutral.

Have rebuilt quite a few D6- D9 size Komatsu transmissions on older stuff, but wondering if you have clutch engagement pistons that are hanging up. How many hours on your unit? Have you looked at the inside of the transmission filter. If it is at all dirty, there could be hydraulic spools that are partially scored or hung up. A few possibilities. Simon C

It is not a clutch, it's hydrostatic so it is moving the swash plate. No visible metal in the filter.

Sorry I missed the Hydro-static part. Is it pure hydrostatic with no gear box, or does it have a gear box to send power to the wheels. Have never worked on one, but Cat made wheel loadeers with pumps that feed motors to turn gears in a gear box. Hopefully someone has worked on your exact unit. I haven't. Simon C
