Hello Just bought a 1988 Ford L8000 and the clutch pedal linkage doesn't return properly. Called Ford dealer and he wasn't much help. Any one have idea how many return springs or a diagram of linkage and springs. Thanks Jon
There's usually only one spring,,, it hooks to the clutch arm and to the frame.... there is also a spring (part of the pressure plate ass.) on the shaft the throw out bearing is secured to. Does your clutch have free play and does the pedal return to the top?
And to add what gramps said, that single spring on the clutch arm is only there to "pull the pedal to the top" in the "free play" area. If your pedal is doing something funky outside of free play area, that spring ain't the problem.
I'd take a look at the bushings where the pedal hangs in the dash. If they get worn the pedal can bind and hang up.
no free play and does not return to top of pedal throw. Guy had a rubber bungee cord on it.
Mine has a shaft on frame rail with grease fittings. Joints might be frozen too.
Seems to work ok, just wont return to the top have to pull up with foot. Called ford dealer and he said spring is not available. Not sure where spring belongs on linkage, would like to see a diagram or picture.
There has to be some form of spring somewhere on the linkage to pull the pedal through the free play pedal range. The clutch pressure plate springs will only move pedal up to the point clutch is fully engaged, pedal will stop there unless there is a spring fitted to move pedal to top of free play. Regardless of what Ford dealer said, there has to be a spring to do this. If nothing else, find a spring and install as gramps suggested, fit it to lever at clutch shaft of bell housing and connect opposite end to something to provide this spring action.
