Do you have to run log books if you cross state lines within 150 miles of your homebase.

Yeah, regretably, I have a LOT of experience with this question. The federal minimum standard is that you are supposed to run a log anytime you are over 100 AIR miles from your starting point, regardless of state lines. An air mile means as the crow (or a helicopter) flies; in other words, in a perfect straight line. Btw, if you want more trucks to fight the DOT over, I'm quitting for-hire trucking tuesday, after 16 yrs, so I'll sell you a few.

Thats air miles straight line from point A to point B.But if you cross a State line you have to run a log book no matter the miles.

http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regulations/truck/driver/hos/fmcsa-guide-to-hos.PDF This has quite a bit of info, but it doesn't say anything about the state lines, there's also some interesting rules and info on the airmiles.

If you cross the state line not only do you need the log book no matter what the distance but authority to go into the state with fuel sticker or trip permit and comply with the visited state vehicle laws. Case in point, Illinois does not recognize lift axles on tri or quad axle dump trucks so you must comply with three axle limits. Oh ya, medical card too for crossing state line required too.
