Hi guys, I and a co-worker are looking at a well used 4500 TLB, the old tractor runs well and the loader works excellent with some engine oil leaks but the hoe is super weak and slow. My question as to what to look for as to the hoe, are there separate reliefs on the hoe valve body, common faults to look at besides the valve body or reliefs. Any issues as to unavailable parts? Will be used as a farm use tractor/backhoe and need it able to dig in hard pan.
check the hydraulic fluid level first. When mine is low it starts to act up. That being said, mine likes some throttle to get the hydraulics in the sweet spot so don't expect much action at idle or low RPMS
A 4500 isn't ever going to dig like a 580c or newer. I have run almost new ones. They are light and only 52 hp when new. The loaders are strong but slow. They are good tough tractors, I have owned a few, worked on a lot more, and still own one that is supposed to be an around the shop utility machine, but is waiting to have it's flex Plate replaced. There are some parts that are no longer serviced by Ford, but those are available used. Some of the parts are expensive compared to other brands I have worked on. Most of the parts you are likely to need are readily available. There is a separate relief valve for the hoe valve body, and most of the individual functions. In short, a 4500 is a good, tough, simple tractor, but it is not a high performance machine compared to late '70s and newer machines.
