My ROPs lights dont work Have no power at the switch or breaker.
I have it for a 580SE. I don't know if it is the same as yours. It is in the service manual.
Check if if there is 12v to ground on all three nuts on the Magnetic switch. Big nut w red wire - should be always on (connects to battery via a breaker) 2nd big nut - 12v when key is on (this feeds some circuit breakers) Little nut - 12v when key is on (this activates the electromagnetic solenoid inside the switch) If you’re not able to read 12v on the mag switch under the various key positions then open and clean the magnetic switch contacts or replace it $40. Otherwise continue downstream, check both sides of circuit breakers for 12v, headlights may be on breaker #1. You should have 12v on both sides of breaker otherwise breaker needs replacing. If you don’t have a spare breaker , use a auto type fuse temporarily while you perform more down-stream diagnosis. Check headlight switch for continuity across contacts, if no continuity then carefully open switch up and clean contacts. These electric components are robust and can be dismantled and cleaned no problem.
thanks it has me baffeled. sometimes I have power to them and somtimes not. Will check conections.
It sure sounds like the mag switch contacts are dirty and not conducting electric current every time. I posted a description of the process to fix that mag switch: HeavyEquipmentForums many would just replace it, 35 years is a long time for a switch to work.
Got 4 volts at it might be a ground on my volt meter. But I think you are right. might just run to town and get a standerd ford starter soleinoid
You can jumper a wire across the mag switch, from big bolt to big bolt.
You could measure the voltage drop and know for sure if the solenoid is your issue. Save you $40 and a trip to town.
Figure out why you’re reading 4v. Put the voltmeter leads on each of the battery terminals, should be 11-13v. Next measure between + positive battery terminal and frame , should be same 11-13volts. Next measure between frame and big bolt with red wire on Mag switch, should be the same: 11-13v. If your meter is reading 4 volts, something is wrong with the setting of the meter, do you have it on AC Volts by any chance?
Dave; If you want the service manual send me your email address in a PM. I will send you an invitation to download it from my Google Drive.
bad switch went a bought a ford soleniod ($17) and put it in. some of thwe lights work . noticed on a picture above 3 wires going to the switch side onf the switch will have to see if I missed one
Now check the fuses ( aka circuit breakers) with your volt meter. Put one lead on a good ground and you should get 12v Dc when you touch the other lead to either sides of every fuse that is connected to the magnetic switch when key is in “on” or “acc” position.
