As much as I dispise our 385's, I like that one. No super long stick so I imagine that thing has a little more power to the crowd. Any more?

what requires the night work?...i have always wanted to run equipment at night...its cooler and theres something about the smell of diesel and moonlight...the only night work i do is when we have to spread sh*t on the farm we will usually run until midnight, but everything else is done during the day

  10. #10hoeman6002008-04-17 19:13

we ran 2 shifts . i picked nights because their tends to be less people around and the weeks go quicker. and because i was 1200 miles from home. the faster i got done the better. i am home now in cali starting to pack to move back to pa in july. but i already miss the big girl

  11. #11dirt digger2008-04-17 19:44

where in PA are you moving and for what if you don't mind me asking?

  12. #12hoeman6002008-04-17 19:52

i'm from west chester...bout an hour away...you working for a dirt company out here?

  14. #14JimBruce422008-04-17 21:24

I ran night shift in one of our quarries for a few weeks last year, it does have a cool different feel to it. Somehting about everything being lit up by the tower lights and all, just looks cool. I think I'd miss running a 385 too:cool2 I'm not too far from you dirt digger, just outside of Coatesville with my fiance. Small world, LOL:usa:drinkup Looks like I might have to get myspace one of these days:duh

  15. #15hoeman6002008-04-17 22:51

dirt digger I am hopefuly going back to myers. I worked their for 8 years befor moving to cali. But any offers will be considerd! I just always liked working for them. They treated ME well. one of the best co's I worked for in 21 years.

  16. #16dirt digger2008-04-18 08:31

good luck....i know they just "laid off" a lot of guys in the beginning of winter. The commercial and residential divisions of it just merged now too, so they have no separation anymore...thats probably so they can employee less operators. I was talking to a rep at a career fair and she made it sound like nothing was wrong with them, but if you talk to guys in thecompany they will tell you how bad they are hurting... i don't know how far you are looking to travel but as far as i can tell Brubacher is doing well. Also companies out in Lancaster are really starting to pick up, my cousin runs a D6 for a company out there and he said they are as busy as they were at this time last year. We are starting to pick back up too, but my boss isn't hiring anyone else for a while...i go back to work as soon as my semester is done in 3 weeks and they won't need another operator until i leave again in August. But AAM is starting another branch of Rt. 202 work down near King of Prussia if i am not mistaken so they very well could be looking for more guys sorry to get this whole thing off track....PM me if you want some names of decent companies in my West Chester/Downingtown area

    Awesome pics!!

  18. #18hoeman6002008-04-18 10:46

no problem digger. ive already talked to myers. they are kinda in a hiring freez but because i worked their for 8 years . i was told they would make a spot for me. as for brubacker naaaa. im not very religous and would not fit in their verry well. plus i dont drive a wagon . my bud pullpan on here is product suport/salesman for giles & ransom in west chestor so he kinda knows who is busy. i worked on several jobs arouns their. the highschool for one. and alot of stuff on 202. and a big job over across from duffers pub britn lakes i think it was called next to wawa? god i miss wawa! anyway il find somthing not to worried. ive worked for haines and a few others. and never burned a bridge that i know of.

  19. #19dirt digger2008-04-18 11:20

haines is good...they just started...i believe two divisions called "chester county site contractors" and "Reading site contractors" I have never seen or heard of these guys before last year, but now i see the trucks everywhere. i wouldn't mind going to a larger company, but the boss i have right now is one of the best i know of...offered me every opportunity i could ask for...so i will be running a little whimpy 15 ton hoe and backhoes this year, nothing like the iron the bigger outfits have best of luck to you

  20. #20Reuben2008-04-19 08:52

Cant think of the company off the top of my head, but I know they are looking for operators to run a pipeline from state college to harrisburg. They are working both directions and are going to meet some where in the middle. I guess they are having trouble finding operators that dont mind being tethered to three d10's and lowered down the mountain. A local guy here in Cameron county that has been retired is actually coming back out of retirement to go dig with them. I will try to get the company's name for ya.

  21. #21hoeman6002008-04-19 10:13

sweet sounds like fun I love that kind of work! mabye it Hankels & macoy? they always did big pipeline work on the east coast.

  22. #22dirt digger2008-04-19 10:18

yea Reuben try and find the name....it might be GOH up here or HRI...i go to school right here in State College and my semester is wrapping up now but for next fall who knows...they might be able to use a part time guy like me for a possible night shift if they will be running one thanks, -Bryan

  23. #23Turbo218352008-04-19 11:20

Not to burst any bubbles. From what I know about pipeline, you have to be certified through the International. We had a class held at our local training grounds this winter. It was 2-3 weeks, 6 days a week, 10 hour days. All training time. At the end you need to test to show your ready. The 6 days a week, 10 hour days is just a warm up for most pipeline crews. From what I understand, its 7 days a week, for weeks on end. It is not uncommon to be working 1 shift of operators any where from 12-16 hour days.

  24. #24dirt digger2008-04-19 16:14

Turbo is that the same as OSHA certification?

  25. #25Turbo218352008-04-20 09:54

I doubt it is the same as an OSHA Cert. Im sure they cover the same distribution principals in the OSHA cert. The pipeliners local has some inside class time. But most of the time is out in the field. They bring several pieces or iron that is pipeline specific. I believe there were 8 dozers, most of them had the straight blade that you can angle by using the pins and bosses on the draft arms. Ive always heard them called pipeline dozers. Some had winches on them. They had 8 excavators. They teach everyone how to dig a pipeline V ditch. Its hard to explain, but instead of digging for with a box, or bringing the trench down in steps, you bring the trench down in steps. Each step not only angles down, but inward also. Its hard to explain, until you see it. They also brought in a pipe bender. They used our locals pipe layer, plus 4 other pipe layers. They had a course set up for the pipe layers. You had to maneuver the pipe through turns, over hills, even under simulated power lines. You had to move the pipe with a partner throughout the whole course. Once you got to the power line, you ran the nose of pipe under, and to the other side. Then, you would unhook the pipe, lower your side boom, run under the power, hook back up to the pipe. Then you had to track forward until your partner had to do the same thing. All in all, the program is ment to show an operator the whole pipe line process. From clearing with dozers and excavators. To digging and backfilling. It also shows how pipe is bent, and moved. From what I understand, if you do not have a union pipeline cert and are a member of the pipeliners local you cannot work a union pipeline job.

  26. #26Reuben2008-04-20 23:47

Most guys that do that work communicate to there families by sending there pay check home. But from what I understand it is a very fat check. Hawbacker and HRI dont do transmission pipeline work like that. My Brother is a civil engineer for HRI and he said they never get into that at all. The company that is doing it starts with an "H". i just cant think of it. It isnt Linde either. I will try to find out this week.

While it definitely has been a rough year for Myers. I don't think that there is any concern of them going out of business (well not yet anyway). The housing market has taken such a dive around here it's hurt just about everyone. Private and Public did merge, the "offical" reason was so that each side can better help eachother with their experiences. That being said there was a lot of "house cleaning" lately, but I think thats about done for now.:beatsme We've got a couple larger commercial jobs just starting or soon to start, so for this summer we have work, just not the backlog of previous years. Course, what do I know, they had me in VA most of this year, LOL!:usa

  28. #28dirt digger2008-04-21 08:26

JimBruce i highly doubt AAM is going out of business, but you know how rumors spread faster then truth. I was actually suppose to interview with them for an internship for the summer but they never called me, guess its because of the hiring freeze...i doubt they would have been able to match the pay i get now, but it would have been a great learning experience

  29. #29JimBruce422008-04-21 16:45

dirtdigger, How many years do you have left in your program? Who did you talk to with AAM, you might be able to try again next year, just keep calling them back, eventually they have to answer you, LOL.:drinkup Worked for me anyway, but that was 3 years ago. The economy has been hurting the housing market which really cut the knees out from under us last year, but the bidding dept. and upper management has started to rethink their strategies (better late then never:beatsme) which seems to be helping us get more jobs lately. Who do you work for in West Chester? Sort of off the topic, but have you been by the Upper Worthington project in Malvern lately? H&K wasted no time in getting iron in there and tearing things up. Sorry about the excessive amount of questions. Talk to you later.

  30. #30dirt digger2008-04-21 19:33

i am a junior this year...graduate next year...talked with a recruiter named Bob George in the winter then again in the spring. He could tell i wasn't too fond of taking a pay cut for doing practically the same work and on top of that i would have had to commute more. I will look at them when i search for full time, but for me while i am still in school i try and make as much money during the summers as i can and AAM just couldn't match what i make now. no i haven't been up malverns way since August but i know H&K is doing the work on Boot road near 322 in downingtown and apparently AAM is starting, or has recently started a big job in Coatesville according to the woman i talked to in February -Bryan
