My lights won’t work in 1989 Case 580K Backhoe

GolferSaylor · 2023-08-01 12:32

We just purchased new warning and tail lights for our backhoe. We took old ones off (which worked fine, just old and rusting and lens broke) plugged new one in the same way and they don’t work. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Welcome to HEF, GolferSaylor ! Are the new ones LED's ? If they are, they are polarity specific.

Hi, thanks for responding. Yes they are and what does that mean?

Also, is there a way to get them to work because the old lights are not available and they have updated them to these LED ones. Thanks

You usually need a modulator for converting to leds with any sort of flasher. Never had a problem for just lights. Check your work? Leds just give betterment light but draw less power. All bets are off if it’s a new machine with computer and VOES.

Hello golfer, polarity simply refers to the positive and negative circuit from the harness. And older glass bulb will light no matter which side or circuit the power, usually referred to as the hot side or positive, and the ground which is typically black wire. You should use a test light to discern which is positive and which is negative from the machine by probing the plug end. The replacement Leds have the correct plug end on them? Are there only two wires? What kind of warning lights are you referring to? The hazards? Thanks, welcome, and good luck with the repair. JR

It is a 1989 case 580k backhoe. The old lights are incandescent and they are the warning lights and turn signal lights.

Yes the plug end is exactly like the old ones and two wires. They are the flasher and turn signal lights. The machine is a case 580K backhoe. Attached re some pics one of the new ones and one of the old ones. Thanks

You may need to change the relay or flasher unit to one that is compatable with LED bulbs. Incandesent bulbs have the resistance to make the contacts in the flasher unit to open and close. You can try disconncting the wires that feed the light sockets and reverse their positions. Doing that will change the polarity of the current going to them. If I remember correctly, the flasher is inside the turn signal switch.

Like on the actual turn signal or in here? Thanks

Also, does anyone know why the cab lights won’t come on. Fuse is good. Thanks.

Have you tried powering the lights prior to install? The blue spade connector is most likely a ground(negative). The other wires are for power. One is tail and one is for hazard/turn. The brighter one will be the turn/hazard. You will need to replace the original flasher with an electronic flasher otherwise the lights will just light up but not flash. I can link you to the flasher I used for my LED conversion Do you have a volt meter? I just replaced all my lights with LEDs and had to sort out some gremlins while there. There were voltage drops on just about each circuit and I ended up cutting out the connectors and wiring them direct.

OOPS ! ! I didn't get the switch in the first screen shot.

Yes we have a volt meter and please send the link…

Ok stupid question. Is it behind stealing console because it’s not in the area where switches are.

A defective switch could be the cause of the cab lights not working. A little time checking for power with a test light will show what is wrong with any 12 Volt circuit. Did you connect one of the lights to the tractor ground and then apply 12 volts to it from the tractor battery. That will show which one is the ground wire and which on is hot. The switch isn't shown in the service manual. But, the mounting bracket Did the turn signals work before you installed the LED's ?

Here is a flasher. https://www.amazon.com/Perfect-Replacement-Compatible-Electronic-Flasher/dp/B0795CS5M4 Did you check the lights and see if they work by connecting to a battery? If we have a wiring diagram then we can give you some tests to make.
