Hey guys, I have been in building construction ( owner and operator) most of my life and looking for a change of pace and that would also hopefully be a good financial decision. My question is this. We live in a big metro area in NC and have been considering buying a tracked skid steer to start doing grading, gravel and such. Is this a good business to get into right now? We have been holding steady with business in construction but times seem to be getting tight all around and there is fierce competition around here. Any pitfalls you can share and are your businesses growing or are you seeing a decline as well? Thank you in advance.
Check with some existing companies on their rates. That will tell you in a round about way of what you will be getting paid
See how many other firms are doing the same type of work you're planning. Skid steer/CTL work can be pretty dog eat dog. I think because skid steers/CTL's are some of the least expensive machines to own and operate as well as transport. Lots of owner/operators. Some would love to have a dozer or excavator but they can't afford them so a SS/CTL is a lower cost option for them to be a (heavy) "equipment operator."
