No dipper action case 580SL

flatlander ยท 2013-07-01 20:08

Digging rocks in Colorado, made a noise and then no dipper action. Dipper is retracted but will not extend. Sounds like the end of shaft broke off. How is the best way to check? Thanks

If you have pressure on both sides on the input then you have failure of the cylidner

I have pressure on both ends. Can I undo shaft end and pull it out the top, use a spanner wrench and check tube foe damage? 1100 mile from home and 6 miles from cell service. As always THANKS

Yes unscrew the gland and pull the rod out. Sounds like the piston retaining bolt is either broken off or it came unscrewed. You may be able to pull the rod out of the barrel without unscrewing the gland.

Got the rod out, unscrewed gland nut, have not got piston out yet. So far everything looks like retaining bolt came unscrewed. Now to get piston out may have to use pressure, no way to get a hold of it to pull it out. The bushing in the rod knuckle, one was flush, the other one stuck out 1/8 inch, which is correct?

I don't know if this will help you or not. I am not sure it's the correct diagram, but should be close. View attachment 580SL_Dipper_Cyl.pdf With the rod in there the hoe should push the piston out, but with the bolt out.... Somebody did not tighten it enough or use the locktite.

Get a length of rod, 10mm or so, & put a hook type bend on the end of it, that will fit through the bolt hole in the piston - & go fishin'

I have stuck my arm in the tube, the bolt is sticking through the hole in the piston, no place to grab.

Can you possibly screw the rod back on there enough to pull it out? At least enough to get a hook in there. You might weld a large nut on a small rod to screw on. Don't screw the piston up, just in case it's not already...

If the cyl barrel is still fitted to the machine, remove it & bang the open end of the barrel onto a good piece of hardwood.

Had a large pair lock ring pliers, wrapped some soft wire around the tips to grip better grip and got piston out. Looks ok, threads on end of bolt messed up and first thread on rod. Looks like rod will be ok and replace bolt. Bolt is inch and half dia. and 3 inches long. Now to find a socket to fit or someone to impact it on.
