One legged operator

Good day, I have a rather odd question. My daughters EX had a run in with a gang member and was shot in the leg. Yep, he is a wanna be gang member. Anyhow his job is operating an excavator. Don't know the make or model. My question is will he be able to return to that line of work since they had to amputate a leg above the knee. I could really care less about him but she gets child support from him for 2 kids. Fortunately he is not in their lives very much.

Should be fine if he has any ambition at all. All it takes is enough "want to" I think. I worked at a Deere dealer years ago, helped an outfit figure out the power supply for a winch in the cab of their log loader. Cab was about ten feet up, operator had lost the use of both legs when a log rolled over him. He drove a pickup with hand controls, would drive up next to the log loader, open the door, grab the cable to hook his harness up and the control pendant, winch himself into the cab. Stayed there nine or ten hours and then winched himself down and swung into his rig for the trip home. Tough man.

an excavator would be one of the easiest machines to run with that type of handicap.you only have two pedals in the floor and they have handles on them also. but thats only if he want's to

I'm no medical experty but it might depend on where his injury progresses to. Sometimes prosthetics cannot be fitted and the amputee ends up in a wheelchair or using crutches. There are more excavators and other heavy machinery being converted to remote operation where the operators are in a far away building, shack or near by on site operations trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9h7A40woSoc (remote operator - excavator) https://www.autoadapt.com/en/information/news/blog/2015/wheelchair-accessible-excavator/ (Norway - wheelchair cab excavator - extensive modifications) Some type of external lift fitted to the cab - california https://youtu.be/CwZFEUt9h4c (External chair lift) Might also use a personnel lift (with remote controls) if the worksite is suitable.
