As I've been getting to know my new-to-me 1970 580ck, I noticed an orifice in the transmission housing, near where it mates wit the engine block. What is this for and is it normal for it to be wide open like this?
That would be your engine timing hole. By the looks of it, the spring loaded cover plate disapeared 30-40 yrs ago! The part number is A35216 which is no longer available. You might be able to fabricate something from stainless sheet to cover it. No big deal...... just dont go sticking your fingers in there while the engine is running
