I'm about to take the engine out and just wondering if anyone's done this , would like to know if the counter weight has to come off first or not it's 0 tail swing

Just about to take an engine out of one. Did you need to remove counterweight?

I don't think it's possible to pull the engine without removing the counterweight. Even if you could, would you want to try? The counterweight lifting points are (qty 2) M42-3 threaded holes. The lifting hardware is absurdly expensive to purchase through Komatsu. Turn some adapter pucks with M42-3 OD threads, and 1"-8 UNC internal threads, and use inexpensive forged 1" lifting eyes. You'll need to chase the counterweight holes with a M42-3 tap (amazon sells a cheap Chinese import tap which will work fine). Note: Komatsu jams wooden plugs into the holes, and the threads will likely not be clean. The best way is to lift the counterweight with a gantry crane, then drive the machine out from under it. I would never work under a suspended counterweight - unless you've got kids and have really good life insurance policy.

Note: the M42-3 threads are applicable to the PC-128 counterweight. The PC-138 should have the same threads, but you'll verify. Also, the PC-128 has both a standard and a heavy counterweight option. Presumably the 138 does as well. Be very careful - the counterweight weighs as much as a small forklift. Make sure your lifting gear is load-rated, and be mindful of sling angles when connecting to a common pick-point.

I have a mini excavator. I'm in the same boat. of course minus the counterweight. PC18MR3. I'm way over my head. But, isn't of any use to me if she won't run. Curious if wiring harness isn't my culprit. Good Luck...

Keep your troubleshooting simple. A diesel engine doesn't need much to run (fuel & compression). If the engine doesn't turn over, check the starter circuit. If the engine turns over but doesn't fire, check the fuel circuit. Most diesel engines have an electric fuel cutoff switch. The switch has more than one function (besides simply shutting down the engine when you turn the key off). For example, a low oil-pressure signal could be used to trigger the electric fuel cutoff switch - shutting down the engine before low-oil damage. Same with high-temp, or equipment tilt, etc. There's many ways to complicate the fuel cutoff circuit, and you can bet the bank that Komatsu has complicated the circuit. Don't be discouraged. Download the manual and take your time troubleshooting. The fuel cutoff switch could be bad, or something elsewhere in the machine/circuit could be interfering with the fuel cutoff switch. Sometimes it's as simple as a blown fuse.

The pc138 generally I've seen have 3 lifting points one centre of the counter weight and two either sides, if you don't have lifting eyes to fit use two slinds and chock the wings where the doors are on the left and right and it'll lift it off without the need for lifting eyes. Also watch the skirting panel on the left that comes from under the cab, just unbolt it to save damaging it. You need to pull the counterweight to pull the engine and you'd be mental not to for how easy it is
