plate clutch vs. torque converter

for those who have operated wire rope crawler cranes, draglines, shovels, pullshovels, in the 3/4 to 3 cu. yd. range (or larger): Which did/do you prefer? Plate clutch or torque converter equipped machines.....and why? I am aware of the "benefits" of torque converters (reduced driveline/machinery shock loads, no engine stalling, multiplication of torque, etc.).
