price of recyced products?

As I mention in one of my other posts in my area we have 2 main options for dumping waste, concrete, bricks and anything else. When duming concrete costs are from range from $12 a tonne up to $80 a tonne based on size and if its clean or not. Normally the stuff I take cost around the $20 a tonne but this all depends on who's working on the gate. They crush this down and make a rubble out it and sell it back from $10 a tonne. I guess this is to bad as the cost of having to crush it would not be cheap. However the nasty one is Biteum road profiles (or thats what we call it here). After they have dug up roads including the road base underneth they charge $8 to recieve, and $12 - $14 or $16 to buy depending on the size. The product they sell for $12 is not crushed screened or anything and at the local city dump they have piles of it. Not a bad profit when all they do is load it and make $20 a tonne. Heres the catch, I have been trying to get about 500 tonnes of this to run out a driveway to a market garden, it doesnt need to be smooth so the clumps of bituem are ok however the only places I can get it are the above 2. Am trying to get it straight from the road contruction companies but they are saying they are not allowed to sell it and have to take it to the above compaines and pay to dump it. Seems to me a nice little rort going and nothing at all to help with recycling as if I am paying $12 a tonne to but the stuff, then $8 a tonne transport (just over an hour per trip) puts the cost up to $20 a tonne. I can get rubble from a quarry delieverd from $17 a tonne. It just seems wrong that some can make so much money each way when all us small operaters want is to make a living.

We have sheeted our yard with bitumen profile...all it needs is plenty of water, a little diesel and a good roller. Some areas have gone off so well you would think its real pro laid bitumen. We get 18m3 delivered for $120 (its just paying for the truck) but we have family connections in the Asphalt game. It sounds like you have similar problems to what we have. Our saviour is competition. We have about 5 large private firms all competing for your business. That said, the closest and (used to be) cheapest has the EPA climbing all over them on a regular basis. They are getting very strict. We had a few tufts of dead cooch in a load the other day and they sent us away. Its so long since I sent any volume to the Council tip I can't really remember. Anywhere here is deadly if you have greenwaste in the load. If your Green is separated its actually not too expensive to tip. Take the Bull by the horns and go buy an disused quarry. I have written to my MP about this tip game.

Hey there squizzy, Just got another price on the bitumen profiles, $15.20 per tonne plus GST deliverled, however I can get dolmite rubble for $19 plus GST (before discount). If i could buy a disussed quarry i would be jumping at it. Moved some fill for a local concreter a while back and some of it had been full of grass when he dug it up, 6 months later it was all nice clean fill. Makes me laugh when you see people wanting clean fill without grass but the piles behind have 2 foot of grass growing on them.

Just thinking out loud here. Do you guys have any power plants that are "cogeneration" Plants. In other words a product for wood debris that is chipped our ground up. Around here we have a few, and a few wood recyclers. I think it will end up being more popular. As for Concrete. Some places will take it for free. Others charge by the axle. Which can get a little pricey considering our trucks and axle groups. Common tip charge is $10 an axle. Dont bring them junk mixed in with the concrete, or your not coming back in their yard again. Some also charge for large pieces of concrete on top of axle cost. All the concrete is crushed into spec gravel, and re used. Most make their money from selling the final product. Asphalt. Im assuming this is what you guys are calling bitumen profile, pavement millings. It used to be you could get 50 tons for 15 dollars. Now the asphalt plants have started re using it in new product. It saves them stone, and asphalt cement. They haul all millings and even any other asphalt to the plant. Where it is crushed, and screened.

You might find the problem with the asphalt, millings, whatever you happen to call them in your area is down to licensed tips. Here in the UK it is unlikely that you could purchase a few loads of plainings straight from the road gang because they have to go to a controlled tip / recycling yard. Concrete, paving, rubble etc will go to a crusher operation for recycling. I noticed a "FREE TIP FOR HARDCORE" sign at the entrance to one of our big local tip ( dumps ) the other day so there is obviously a shortage of waste concrete for crushing. As stated previously, dont try mixing anything else in with it else you wont be back. At other times you pay the full going rate to tip it and they still crush and resell it . Supply and demand :drinkup

AtlasRob, Yes you are pretty well spot on that the plannigs/ millings/ profiles go to the licensed tip,. thats my beef as all they do is charge $8 a toone to recieve it, pile it up and charge $12 a tonne to buy it, thats $20 a tonne and all they have to do is pile it up and load it out. If they crush it they charge up to $16 a tonne for it.

Very frustrating I have to agree, :yup although if the boot was on the other foot I reckon we both would think we were on to a good earner. I suppose from thier point of view they are providing the storage and loading and if there is a lull in demand they have a stockpile for a long time also they no doubt have to jump through hoops to get the permits etc to handle the stuff. Not that any of that helps ease your frustration. Here have this on me, :drinkup

Squizzy, have some good news here, kind off. I have been able to track down as much bitumen as I need that is screened, crushed and delieverd for $14 a tonne. How did you go about laying yours out with the water etc? Any help would be great thanks.

It all depends on how clean it is and how much free tar is in it. Hot day, spread with bobcat and level up. 2 tonne vibe roller (or bigger), one good rolling and level up any depressions with Bobcat again. Then roll the daylights out of it until you are happy. Then very fine spray of diesel and sit in sun for 10-15 minutes, roll to seal surface than shirtloads of water and keep rolling. if you put too much diesel it will eat it away. The water is to knock the diesel off when you have got the surface nice and smooth. Some water when you are spreading also helps. If its hot enough you don't need the diesel and spreading diesel around is not practicle on some sites.

Wow you guys really make me feel good about our dump fees here, Clean concrete and asphalt dumping at recyclers is free, in fact if you have a large job with good concrete the recycle plants will compete for your offhaul by offering to send thier own trucks. Aggragate products are at a priemum and also costly to mine so the recycle is very popular. They do not care if the ac and concrete are mixed. Just no organics.
