I know New Holland has switched to R1234YF in some of their new big AG equipment. It is my understanding that John Deere and others are going to switch over as well. Does anyone know when? Or whom else is in the middle of the change.. Regards, EB
I have no answer to your question but im already mentally preparing for the day i have to switch all the 134 systems over including the ones i already switch from r12.
Source: https://www.nefb.org/11/10/2023/epa-announces-final-rule-to-phasedown-of-hfc/ The EPA has now decided to follow the lead of the European Union. This new EPA rule prohibits the sale and import of not only home air conditioning and refrigerators, but of motor vehicles. First, this rule will prohibit the manufacture and import of vehicle systems using R-134 in MY 2025 for most consumer vehicles. Heavy duty vehicles will have a compliance date of MY 2028, and nonroad vehicles (most tractors) will have a compliance date of January 1, 2028, meaning we are less than five years away from agricultural equipment having an industry wide change in their refrigeration system. I sure hope the price comes down on that stuff and the retrofit equipment.
1234yf is not a drop in replacement so to retrofit a 134a system things will have to be changed.
Meanwhile just about every farmer on the planet has been charging their old r12 systems with cans of whatever they find at the local store lol.
I don't remember what the guy put in my old R22 home system last time. He said it wasn't supposed to be compatible but would work. It's been working for 4 years now. The reversing valve in my heat pump was leaking so I switched to just using the heat strips. Heats the house faster and runs less than it ever did in heat pump mode and hasn't leaked down again.
Higher pressure, volatile gas, what could possibly go wrong? It's not like a rupture would ever be subject 1100°F under hood temps. Right, makes perfect sense. Rather than let a little R134a or R12 escape, let's ignite the whole damn thing. How harmful could it be? It's for the environment! Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit outta my hat! Lol
