Sorry your out of luck you will have to replace the seal and while your at it do the clutch. Once the rear main starts leaking it weeps for awhile then turns into a gusher.

LT, is that a split or one piece seal? Do we have to pull the pan or tranny and clutch? Thanks, DP

Not sure about the 8.3 Cummins but I assume it might be a 1 piece seal if the truck is new enough. Replacing the rear main is a job you want to do in a shop so when you pull the transmission and stuff off its easy to work on. If the truck has a manual transmission might aswell do the clutch. Now are you sure the oil leak is coming from the seal and not somewhere else on the engine ? I would get under there with some brake clean and wash the bellhousing down and all the back of the engine. Look for where the oil is coming from. If you have taken the inspection plate off the bottom of the bellhousing and there is oil slung around inside then its more than likely the rear main is gone. I know its a pain to pull a truck off of a job but sometimes its cheaper to loose money on the job than spending a fortune on the truck. Once that oil starts slinging around it can saturate you clutch and it can start getting into the drive gear of the starter. Starters and oil don't mix oil kills a starter quick. Also if your rear main turns into a gusher you may pump all the oil out of the engine. If its a 2 piece seal you still need to remove the flywheel its too much of a pain to do try pull the upper seal through with the flyhweel on. Now you have a Cummins that thinks its a 2 stroke detroit :roll

It's a "94 L8000, yes the oil is dripping from the bell housing bottom cover, I assume it has to be the main seal nothing else to leak in there is there?. Will continue with it unless it gets to bad, need another 3-4 weeks then I'll send it to a shop. Thanks for your help. DP
