If I were to rent a semi truck (that is on non op) from a person (not a company) I would be renting it for about a week. What would I need besides a trip permit & temp fuel permit? Thanks
does the truck have tags and insurance?

I believe the tags are expired as it is on non operation registration and I dont know about the insurance a neighbor of the owner of the truck used it for hauling rock with a trip permit without any problems.
I'm not up to speed on truck regulations, but what's a non operation registration?
are you planning to cross state lines?
maybe into nevada
definitely got to have lisc tag, insurance, trip permit, fuel tax permit, then. And just because somebody else got away with it doesn't mean they won't ruin your month.
And CDL. I know that's a given, but it hasn't been mentioned here.
Does it matter if the owner's DOT Authority is inactive? Do I have to put my Company name, MC # and DOT # on the truck?
dzlnut, I was hoping someone with way more truck regulation experience than me, which is little, would chime in here. But since none have come forward, and any that follow this post, please shoot me down if I'm all wet, but to drive a semi across state lines you're gonna need the appropriate CDL. As for the truck, you can split hairs with who is responsible for what, but in the eyes of DOT, it's all the responsibility of the driver. If you want to sit for and hour/hours at a DOT stop to sort out responsibility, that's your choice. But having ducks in order before you embark on your trip will save you this hassle. A semi hauling loads across state lines requires all the pertinent requirements, DOT # on cab, IFTA fuel tax agreement paperwork, proof of insurance, proper tags and registration, permits as load requires, and log book if driver travels more that 100 nautical miles, and maybe some items that I can't think to mention since I'm not up to speed on truck regulations. But it's not about who owns the truck, but that the truck meets regulation requirements, and the driver of the truck is directly responsible for that.
Not sure what regulations are where you are but to run local here no medical card need for driver depending upon when CDL was obtained. However to cross state line must have it even though within 100 air miles of base of operation. Here could also go across state line with a trip permit for each state going into on a one time basis negating need for IFTA, multi state plates and the like. A rental unit is registered to the owner, or lessor. Must also have a copy of the lease document in the truck at all times.
