terex 72-31 BA transmission filter issue

zlssefi ยท 2010-12-28 18:13

I have an 86 terex 72-31 BA wheel loader. during this last storm we had the oring in the filter housing kept blowing. It would blow the oring right out of the filter head. I have owned the machine for 3 years and never had this problem. the filter has been changed annually so filter maintenance isnt a problem. Does anyone know what might be going on? Thanks!

zlssefi I have seen this before with Terex TA hall trucks with the ZF transmissions .Their should be a bypass in the filter head.It may not be opening .What filters are you using? Also what oil are you running in the trans?

transmission filter I am using Napa 1133 filters. They are a paper filter with the steel screen on the outside. The fluid im using is made by 76. Its called tractor hydraulic fluid. On the can it says it can be used in transmissions and hydraulics together. thanks for the reply, id like to get this issue fixed!

Do you have piture you can send me were this filtr located?

I dont have a picture, but the filter is remote mounted on the frame of the machine with four bolts and there are two hydraulic lines bringing the fluid from the transmission to the filter and back. I figured something out yesterday that may help. My diesel mechanic told me those filter housings are supposed to be torqued to 70 foot pounds, there was no way i was getting it that tight so maybe just under torquing is the problem...what was the issue on the haul trucks that you found?

you said you have had the machine for 3 years you didn't get it from benco in foxborro ma?

i bought it from omalley welding near worcester....is benco a rock crushing company? judging by some of the rocks ive found in it and the wear in the machine id guess it was owned by a crushing corp.

zlssefi Yes if the torque is not right they will leak . The problem with the haul trucks were that the aftermarket filters were not made heavy enough asthe oem .The filtes would crack and stretch. Also found the bypass valve was getting stuck .These trucks had a spin on filters.

this style isnt a spin on filter, i wish it was. its a steel can with the bolt going through it and the filter element inside the can. I have the machine back together, hopefully it holds up, the only other thing it could be is the main pressure regulating valve which is in the valve block on the side of the trans., i may look into that.

our town auctioned off one about 3 years ago and they bought it from auction to resell it was repainted yellow with a white top

this one is like a pale cream color, no yellow. After an engine rebuild and a few new hoses its been a pretty good machine.

Well, i thought i had the problem fixed but apparently not. this storm again we blew two of these o-rings out. Ive torqued the filter bolt tighter, tried everything...any other ideas?

Any way to get the machine inside, warmed up to room temp & see if the problem repeats itself? I am wondering if it is cold weather related & ice inside the hyd. lines causing pressure to build? Just a thought.

zissefi , them o-rings never give trouble if you use the proper size o-ring and use a viton o-ring ( high temp o-ring ) also don`t use the cat yellow o-ring , i am led to believe that although they are an high temp o-ring they are only a low pressour o-ring or has someone put a o-ring in instead of the gasket which fits right at the bottom of the housing if it is the o-ring type it should have a o-ring grouve halve way up off the bottom of the cast housing a picture would be handy cheers

o rings I will post a picture as soon as i get the machine apart. The issue only started once i changed the transmission pump last year. We never had any storms of any length last year so it wasnt a problem, now were running the machine from 6 to 20 hours and it happens almost every 6 hours. The orings are the ones that come from napa with the 1133 filter cartridge. it has a yellow stripe but is black for the most part. I would try to make the problem happen inside, but it takes like 6 hours of running to do that.....i appreciate all the responses guys!

I took some pressure tests today, at the filter housing i have 250 psi, after the regulating valve i have 150. That tells me the regulating valve is working like its supposed to. I looked into getting some teflon o rings made to fix the problem. Any other thoughts guys?

Have you looked at the OEM parts list for the filter? Transmission filters are under higher pressure then engine, or Hydraulic filters. If the seal goes in a groove and the edge of the can is what seals, some of the originals used a square ring instead of an O ring so the groove was completely filled as opposed to an O ring that only has initial contact with the bottom and sides of the groove.

  17. #17zlssefi2011-01-20 07:39

Im using napa filters but my next try is a terex factory filter. The rings im using are square rubber rings, they seem like they are disintegrating under the pressure or heat, when i take them out they look like they were rolled during installtion but i know thats not the case. I found some teflon or nylon square rings that im going to try next.

Considering that the machine is 25 years old, maybe the groove has worn over time or the edge of the can. Any chance that the filter head has warped over time. Try cleaning both the groove and the edge of the can, put some marking ink in the groove and put the can in without the ring and see if the ink transfers evenly. Just a thought, strange things can happen over time.

That is a good thought, Ive owned the machine for 3 years and just started having this problem. A friend of my dads suggested maybe the oil im using is " attacking" the rubber of the o-rings, never thought of it but from what they look like it is possible. I put a teflon o ring in today and im hoping that makes the difference.
