Im working on a 1900z for a friend of mine, and like most trojan loaders it has no brakes. I have air at the master cylinder all the time, i am unsure if this is correct. if i disconnect the air line and use a blow gun on the master cylinder then i can hear the cylinder move and you can bleed the brakes but when i reattach the air line that comes from the brake pedal then the brakes seem to not function. Is there any retrofit on these to use a different air/hydraulic master cylinder ? or perhaps an air driveshaft brake? He wants to use it as a snow machine but he does want it to have at least some brakes. Thanks in advance guys
Sounds like the master cylinder is fine, but your treadle valve (pedal) is either not working or there's a parking setup that is malfunctioning. Have you tried cleaning around the pedal good and applying some penetrating oil to the pedal pivot area? Those treadle valves are usually box common and available at any decent parts store or truck shop.
What type of brakes does this thing have at the wheels? Drums or disks? If Drum are they wedge type actuators? From the air tank to the master cylinders either one should function just like plane and simple air brakes. There should be no air pressure getting to the masters with brake treadle valve in the up position. So as lantraxco says check to make sure the peddle on the treadle is free along with the plunger that the peddle pushes down on the treadle valve. And yes if there is a problem with the valves themselves any truck parts shop should be able to match them up, just take it in don't expect anyone there to have any idea of what a 1900z Trojan is, they will tell you to go to the drug store if you need a Trojan! I would suggest these people in Albany: ASI Truck Parts, Inc 1201 Broadway Albany, New York 1-518-438-6649 1-800-286-4274 FAX 1-518-396-3407 We have dealt with their partners in Syracuse for years and always had good luck. In the long run I'm guessing you are going to find more than one problem, first the problem with the foot valve and then once that is corrected you will find problems with the wheel end brakes if drums with wedge cylinders either broken parts in the actuators or adjusters that are set up and not working. Wedge brakes can be touchy to get working but once everything is fixed they will work just fine. Heck Cat even used them on some machines! If you can get some pictures of the master cylinder and what ever is at the wheel ends.
I never heard that the Trojans had brake problems any more than any other loader. All good advice here, especially the foot treadles hanging because of obstructions such as dirt accumulation underneath over time.On some loaders the left treadle will declutch the transmission and the right treadle does not,I can't remember if the Trojan is one of those or not.Ron G
Thanks for the suggestions guys, going after the treadle valve was my next plan just wanted to make sure I was headed in the right direction. Also kshansen it has 4single piston hydraulic calipers for the front axle so hopefully they are in good repair, know what you mean about the old wedges what a pain
Calipers=Great! If they ain't leaking they should be working.
Well if there are problems with the calipers I'd be guessing the place I suggested can help with those too. PBS Brake is the Syracuse branch and they did good by us many times. And if it has disc front brakes you should have more brakes than you can use, make sure your seat belt is snug before making a panic stop!
Got the old girl squared away yesterday, the left brake pedal was leaking air to the booster and not allowing the brakes to be fully applied or released. Got a new one matched up at a local shop and the loader stops when it's supposed to. Thanks for all the help guys
Well done! :drinkup
Glad you got the leak fixed, trying to not say something about having a leaky Trojan, dang it I just did!
