opinions wanted- I know what works for me, but I want to compare notes- on/off highway class 8 truck greasing frequency kingpins, u joints, s-cams ?
Off highway 10,000 miles a year if your really moving around, grease every oil change, 200-250 hours or 4-5 weeks, and check all the oil holding devices.
I did my haul trucks and lowboys every 5k. My thinking was it’s consistent eyes on everything and if you don’t get carried away with the cordless grease gun and blow out seals it won’t hurt anything.
Trucks at work I do in the fall and spring they see at most 18000 a year (that one I try to get mid summer rest are less then 10000) dad's dump trucks get twice maybe 3 times also very low miles 5000 or so.
Sometimes my stuff may not get enough miles to need an oil change in a year so no matter what it will get greased once a year and like Junkyard said its a good time to look things over.
If running a bunch of gravel roads, or running around a site, brakes need to be greased weekly. Otherwise, every 5000 miles. Driveline gets it 5000 miles or monthly.
Had a good friend (he passed away about 5 years ago) that had approx 20 trucks that basically ran the midwest pulling tanks, reefers, vans, hoppers and a couple that hauled livestock. Most trucks were at his shop most weekends and got greased every week. I always felt that was a little excessive but his theory was like junkyard said, things get looked over more consistantly and hopefully catch some problems before they turn into big problems.
grease is getting damn near more expensive than parts pretty soon
Don't have to grease every time it's looked over. That's OCD. Rule of thumb--Mechanical engines OTR 15,000 full service, 7,500 short. Extended full service 30,000 with a short every 10,000. Electronic engines. On/Off road grease every 7,500, oil is what ever owner does for conditions. * So some can get a idea---most any trucks built from 2016 up have non greaseable U-joints unless spec'ed otherwise. Out of the millions of miles my old company puts on and the some 90 tractors that have sealed U-joints---Only had one have a issue--just one mind you. Penske on there rigs---Full service intervals are------------------------------------------------- 55,000 for heavy haul, tractor with drop. oil change 65,000 for 80,000 GVW, depending sometimes 70,000. oil change. Greasing king pins, steering, drop axle only done at major oil change intervals. With air disc--nothing to grease.
