Water in Hydraulics

jterr ยท 2023-09-19 12:56

I have changed filters and fluid had air in lines. Thought it was out ran ok, then sat for about a week; then went south on me. It is really jerky , when moving it will move then just stop and start again. I noticed on one of the backhoe legs when moving up and down. the fluid coming out around seal looks to be full of bubbles and not clear(maybe water). Any suggestions?? Will water settle to bottom so I can drain?? JD110 Backhoe Commercial model

Sounds like you may have an aeration problem. Is the oil at the proper level on dipstick? Foamy hydraulic fluid will weaken it and things won't work right again until the bubbles dissipate. If you let the backhoe sit turned off for a while, do things go back to normal?

Oil looks ok maybe a little high. I wouldn't say foamy like saving cream just lots a little bubbles. After it sat is when all this started, worked ok after the change and air bubbles thought were gone

There's a couple ways to test the oil. Get an SOS oil sample kit at Cat and send in a sample of the oil, that will tell you the moisture percentage. Or, heat up a piece of steel to where oil will smoke on it, then drip a drop of your mixed up oil onto the steel, if it's water it will crackle and pop, if it's just air it will smoke just like clean motor oil. I'd guess the foamy looking oil is a symptom of the hydraulic system sucking air, it would have to be badly aerated for the oil to affect the hydraulics that badly. If you do have water, there are ways to dry the oil rather than repeatedly changing the oil and only getting part of the water each time.

Where would it be sucking air? Is there away to check as we are stuck in the woods trying to get it to run long enough to get out

Welcome to HEF, jterr It seems to have a lot of hose clamps on the suction lines that could be the culprit.

Are the hydraulics giving you problems, or the transmission? or is this a hydrostatic trans?

  7. #7jterr2023-09-20 23:46

All the above. Everything jumping, moves very slow then stops, start going again really slow.

mg2361 will probably need your machine serial number to be able give you any advise. Serial numbers are needed because it is quite normal for a manufacturer to make production changes and not change the model designation of the machine.

Is it a hydrostatic transmission? I'm not familiar with a 110. How about a little history of this problem? how long have you run this machine and when did it start acting up?

  10. #10jterr2023-09-21 19:28

Yes All started after recent hydraulic oil and filters changed-about a week or so ago

If all was well before the fluid and filter change, remove and check the seals on those new filters. They are the correct filters right ?

Thanks gonna rechecck all as we got it to barn, finally

  13. #13jterr2023-09-22 12:14

Update-seems the B/H legs have water but doesn't llook like in the system. Gonna try and drain the lines.

  14. #14jterr2023-09-22 19:14

I got water out oil looks dark but not milky. Runs better but seems to still pulse/jerk. Gonna sit and do the steerring wheel turn tomorrow for ahile and see if it helps

  15. #15jterr2023-09-23 13:22

Still has water/air. Not sure what to do now. Suggestions

  16. #16Delmer2023-09-23 15:12

First thing I'd do is figure out if it's water or air. It was working fine before the oil change, was the oil contaminated before and that's why you changed it? or was it clear? Is there any chance an open container had water that got put into your machine? Do the hot metal drip test and see what results. If it's air, hopefully it is, then we have some where to go. Either an air leak, or a suction line plugged/collapsed? Any chance a plug in one of the filters didn't get removed? plastic or a rag maybe?

It was just starting to move slower and had what looked like cloudy oil leaking out of the b/h stabs. Thought I had it some what better yesterday but when I went out to move it wouldn't lift the bucket till it ran for awhile. Gonna get some more oil and remove the filters and check Sunday. Will update

Any possibility you put the wrong fluid in?

  19. #19jterr2023-09-24 14:25

    Said on container correct type.

Update.... We changed oil checked the filters, all looked ok. Ran tractor for about and hour and did the steering wheel back and forth. At 1st was really bad but after warming seemed to be not as bad, but there is a pulsing noise coming out from what looks like a pump in the front below and front of fan.

  21. #21Delmer2023-09-24 22:12

How about a picture of the pulsing pump? part of the problem is the 110 is just not that common, and doesn't have much in common with other JD backhoes, or at least we don't know what it has in common.

  22. #22jterr2023-09-25 00:12

Sorry best I could do as it is midnight here. This is in front/below fan and the shaft is going thru the lower pulley

  23. #23Tinkerer2023-09-25 07:20

    That is the hydraulic pump.

  24. #24jterr2023-09-25 12:45

I understand this has 3 pumps. Think this one is for the steering as it still jumps and that is where the noise is comming from

  25. #25jterr2023-09-26 11:39

    Can those pumps be rebuilt?

  26. #26jterr2023-09-27 13:10

Just checked oil again and it seems to have way too much. Only put 9.5 gals in after draining. It called for 9.5 gals...
