pulsating ignition switch? case 580d

mervmaster ยท 2014-08-03 16:12

My case 580d backhoe won't stay running. The key won't start the machine, but It starts when I jump the starter across the solenoid. Up until today it would run as long as the key was in the on position, but now it runs for 2 seconds and dies. It also seems to lose voltage until some relay clicks off and then resets. Here is a quick video. Case 580d ignition problem: http://youtu.be/PPC8TY2DwQk Any ideas? My hope is that its the ignition switch itself failing and not some dead short caused by mice or some other nonsense. I appreciate your time. Thanks.

I'll guess that's a circuit breaker tripping and automatically resetting (having no idea if Case uses resetting circuit breakers?) Start at the battery, see what the voltage is doing when the ignition is clicking on and off (a clamp meter/amp meter would be even better). Or take all the fuses out and see if you find any that are causing the on/off.

They do use resetting breakers... Behind the instrument cluster. Also check the main power relay back there, kinda to the right side behind the dash on the "firewall" if it had one.

we checked the power relay and each of the breakers behind the instrument cluster. We jumped the relay with no change and unplugged the breakers one at a time, none effecting the issue. Maybe there are other breakers?

IIRC there is a circuit breaker for the main feed on a bracket just above the starter on the block, test lite that when the problem is occouring, obviously it should be hot both sides. Also check the harness plug in the center of the tractor above the power shuttle, on some units that were used in a salt and calcium enviorment I have had to jumper around corroded off pins, check for voltage on the back of the switch, if none, work toward the source. Keep us posted

Melben! That was the issue. The case was leaking a tiny bit of oil, which gotninto the breaker and added resistance. A four dollar 40 amp replacement breaker fixed it. Thanks so much for your help, it kept me from back tracing shorts from the battery backwards.

Glad it was that easy, electrical can be a nightmare. Mel
